National Latino Council on Alcohol and Tobacco Prevention (LCAT) 1st National Hispanic/Latino Conference on Tobacco Prevention and Control September 27-28, 2001 Washington, DC Welcome to our First National Hispanic/Latino Conference on Tobacco Prevention and Control. As you may or may not know, tobacco use has steadily increased among the Hispanic/Latino population over the past few decades. Although the incidence of Hispanic/Latino smokers is relatively low compared to other racial and ethnic groups, it is imperative that the health community come together to address this emerging crisis and ACT NOW. The substantial increase of the Hispanic/Latino community in most states, as seen in the latest U.S. Census data, coupled with numerous reports showing smoking among Hispanics to be positively associated with acculturation, substantiate the need for this conference. At LCAT, we recognize the necessity to assist and support local, state and national organizations with culturally appropriate anti-tobacco efforts. Our national conference will attempt to provide participants with relevant and current information on tobacco use among Hispanics/Latinos, as well as with the necessary skills to enable them to respond to this emerging crisis. This conference will educate the Hispanic/Latino community and those who serve them on the negative health, social, and economic impact that the tobacco industry's targeted marketing has on Hispanic/Latinos nationwide. Attendees will be empowered by the up to date information, resources and skills building workshops provided. The nationally recognized speakers and network development and coalition building opportunities will allow us all to realize that " Tobacco Control is in our Hands " .
