Hi:

I think Motrin is part of the NSAID group of inflammmatories (like,

Ibuprofen, etc). A while back before I started using supplements, I

was using Ibuprofen for a while to reduce swelling, taking about 2-4 a

day. When I went in for a regular medical check up, the doctor found

traces of hemoglobin in my urine, thinking that the Ibuprofen was the

culprit. I understand from different health articles I've read that

too much of the NSAIDS may cause liver and kidney damage. Sure

enough, when I stopped taking them, my urine analysis went back to

normal. I now use Glucosamine and Alpha Lipoic Acid and reduced my

sugar and refined starches intake. Not only did my facial swelling

reduce but so did my abdomen. So the " old pair of jeans " look like

they're supposed to! I don't feel " puffy " anymore. Hope this helps.

I'll weigh in the on the Motrin, but just a little

bit, because I'm no expert. Mark B. has posted on this

subject, and it is in the archives.

Some people in the medical field are starting to

believe that NSAIDS, the class of medicines that

includes Motrin, Advil, ibuprofen, etc. may contribute

to a more permeable lining in the gut (because they

break down tissues, the way aspirin may cause ulcers

in some people, for example). Because of this, the

blood stream may be exposed to large molecules of

food, not entirely digested, setting the stage for

histimine (allergic) responses. This may (I emphasize

MAY) be why some folks end up with allergies when they

never had any and why the ibuprofen-for-flushing

cycles may start a self-perpetuating problem.

I can control my rosacea with dietary controls (90%)

and Claritin (10%)... but in the years before I

pinpointed my allergies -- which were then mild -- I

took TONS of Advil for the flushing and headaches

which followed...

.... so it makes sense to me.

Mark B.'s version of this is far more scholarly, but I

think I've give a fair simple version.

I have also wondered about the facial swelling side effect of motrin, advil

etc. I used to take it for anti inflammatory properties, then read the

possible side effects and stopped. My doc told me it can cause

edema......anyone else know anything about it? I now take aspirin with a

tums, or wobezyme, when I feel swollen.

I get edema as well when I take ibuprofen. I take it because it's the

only thing that seems to reduce monthly cramping. Luckily, that's

only a few times a month.

Can you guys please explain to me what you mean by facial swelling? Many

days when my skin is particularly red (and a few days when its not so red) I

wake up, look in the mirror, and my face seems to have gotten fatter, like I

gained 15 pounds overnight, all of it in my cheeks (Even tho everywhere

other than my face i'm really skinny). It comes and goes, but is there

probably more often than it is not, and is most of the time actually more

distressing to me than the redness itsself. Whenever I try to explain this

to a family member or a friend however, they look at me like I'm nuts. Is

this what you mean by facial swelling? Or is it something else? Thanks

Adam

Adam, my cheeks swell, also - and that is the only swelling (other than

possibly my nose) that I ever get. Mine is not so visually noticeable as

yours seems to be, but when I smile while looking straight ahead, I can see

my cheeks sticking out without even looking down. Zyrtec or a spray of

Nasalcrom (on my face rather than in my nose) helps me a lot at times like

those. HTH Jackie
