can hernias be small? They are no bigger than a dime in size? and would they

hurt? He has not complained of pain.

I will call his ped. tomorrow.

My 7 yr old had two bad hernias when he was baby and had to have them surgically

corrected. They were down low in the pelvic area. You couldn't see them outside

though.

Thanks!

Adam just had surgery for an umbilical hernia (meaning it was located

at his belly-button. The muscles didn't fully close properly after

his cord fell off.) His hernia was always soft unless he was crying

and upset. We could easily push it back in and feel the " hole " in the

muscle. His hernia was as big as a small plum, but the hole in the

muscles was only as big as a nickle, maybe even a little smaller.

I keep reading this barrel chested symptom and I am not sure what it means but

if it means flared ribs (more big at the bottom), it describes Caden's chest to

a T. When he walks, you can actually see the bottom of his ribs coming first!

Not his belly or his head or shoulders, you see the bottom of his ribs.

Is this what " barrel chest " means??

Re: knots under the skin?

Could they be hernias? Traci looks like she has poor posture because CF

causes her to be barrel chested.

My son, now 18 months old, had surgery on the fifth day of his life for what

was thought to be a bowel obstruction. I later learned that the obstruction

was due to meconium ilieus. While the Docs were " in there " on Jack, they

found a hiatal hernia on his lower left. They did the removal and repair

but he still had a " bulge " on the OTHER side of his lower abdomen (below the

belly-button running down to his " package " ) which was another possible

hernia that I had to watch. His second hernia appeared to me to be almost

the illusion of a lower intestine full of marbles Thankfully, after about

five months, that " possible hernia " disappeared, and his surgeon ruled it a

non-event. Phew!

I'm still uncomfortable with the fact that my kid has a wicked case of

" puffy tummy " every time he eats. Granted he eats TONS, but he's rarely ever

NOT PUFFY, even on an empty tummy. I think I've finally reached an

equilibrium with his fat intake and his enzyme needs -- at least for today.

Sorry that I ran off-topic!!

Have you had an ultrasound done on Caden's abdomen? It's painless,

drug-free and can be kinda " tickly " ? That might be your best solution.

Just my 2 cents!

knots under the skin?

swelled out tighter than usual tonight. He is very skinny but his little

belly sticks way out when he eats. He actually has very poor posture. His

back sways in. His muscle tone is poor (on top) and his shoulders droop too.

I think he would be a whole inch or so taller if he could stand up tall and

straight.

The big belly is another sign of CF. I remember everyone always making fun of

my girls bellies when they were little. It is because the food sits in their

belly until it comes out in their stools. Sorry I don't know what the bumps

are but my middle kid that doesn't have CF has something like that on her ear

lobe and I have talked to the doctors about it and they just tell me to keep

an eye on it and see if it will go away and it hasn't and it hasn't gotten

any bigger either. It doesn't hurt her. When we are at the doctors office I

forget to say something to them about it. I need to do that. Sorry I can't be

of better help to you. Deb A
