more birth control woes...

Well this is confusing, because all my problems started when I stopped the birth

control pill. I'm wondering if that's because when I stopped the pill, I became

low in progesterone and I was estrogen dominant.

Well, I don't know that there is much that I can do right now...but I

posted some concerns that I had last week on birth control

(Ortho Tri Cyclen is what I was on for the past 11 months) and

the possibility that it was aggravating my pancreas or caused

my attack. Well, for the past week I had my period so I wasn't

taking pills for that week. I felt great--even with eating 100g of fat

a day for this poo test thing. I never ever paid attention to it

before, so I wonder if this is in my head...I will have to see. But, I

went to the clinic I get my pills at (I've beeen trying to get into this

one obgyn, but she isn't taking patients for 3-4 months) and

talked to someone there about getting a lower dose pill. She

switched me to the lowest dose pill they have--it is called

Loestrin--I was to start the new pill pack yesterday, but forgot so I

had to take 2 today. All of a sudden, now I have the old

discomfort feeling back. Nothing too bad, but it is really

aggravating me.....Well, just felt the need to share

That is indeed interesting. I have decided on NO hormones. Irregardless of

if my pulmonary doc gives the OK.(which I seriously doubt he will anyway). I

think I have found a doctor at MUSC to see. I am going to call in the

morning and see when I can get in. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, it is confusing...I am going to just wait and ask my GI about

it when I see him after my MRCP. If I continue to have pain after I

take the pill I might consider the depo shot. I keep hearing about

the massive weight gain people have, but when I asked the

nurse at the clinic I get my pills from she said that it isn't actually

the shot that causes the weight gain, but the progesterone

increases ones appetite so they tend to eat more. I read this in

some other research as well. So I guess I would just have to

watch my appetite and excercise? We'll see what I find out.

Women on BC pills,

I have been reading with interest your concerns about birth

control pills and whether the effects of increased estrogen could

be causing your pancreatitis problems. Due to a diagnosis in

childhood of phlebitis several times, I was never able to take

birth control pills during my childbearing years. For a short while

when I was pre-menopausal I took Premarin. I switched to a

soy-based estrogen replacement several years ago. The issue

of increased amounts of estrogen is a concern.

Some research on Google for " estrogen " , " birth control pills " and

" pancreatitis " has pulled up all kinds of interesting information.

Here is just one example of many:

Pancreas Disorders

Pancreatitis, lnflammation of the Pancreas, Acute pancreatitis - A

condition in which the cells of the pancreas become inflamed.

The most common causes of pancreatitis in the United States

are alcohol ingestion and gallbladder disease with gallstones.

Also people with very high triglyceride levels (fat) in the blood

stream may develop pancreatitis, and patients taking certain

medications occasionally develop pancreatitis. The medications

most commonly causing pancreatitis are birth control pills,

estrogens and steroids (i.e. prednisone or cortisone).

This is only a sliver of the information that I found. If anyone has

concerns about their particular products, I suggest you research

them thoroughly and talk with your doctors about the possible

side effects.
