Guest guest
I have heard that Lasik surgery can cause dry eyes. If dry eye is a problem for someone with ocular rosacea (as it is for myself), I would be afraid to have it done. -Donna
Guest guest
I had Lasik surgery about 18 months ago, and unfortunately had a pretty bad flare-up of ocular rosacea in my right eye about one week after the procedure. The doctor who did the procedure ( Manche, Stanford U. Laser Eye Clinic) was terrific, seeing me every few days, and prescribing the right combination of eye drops and ointment to get it resolved within a week or so. About one year later, I had another flare-up, which another opthamologist treated with similar medicine and results - both stated that the flare-ups were likely coincidental to the Lasik procedure, which seems plausible considering my past history of blepharitis and OR. However, I was not able to really wash and clean my eyelids right after the procedure, so perhaps it was the disruption of my cleaning routine that was the trigger (just my opinion). For about six months after Lasik, my eyes were very dry, which I treated with artificial tears 5-6 times/day. I also got nightime halos, which slowly diminished after 3 months or so. Now I have no problem with halos. Do I regret having had Lasik? No way! Despite the cost, the down time, dry eyes, and halos the results were more than worth it. My eyesight is now nearly perfect - and I was profoundly nearsighted (8.5 diopters). Performed by a skilled, reputable doctor (this I cannot stress too much), Lasik is a dramatically life-changing procedure. We were so happy with the outcome, my less near-sighted wife had the procedure with Dr. Manche 3 months later, with equally great reults, and no dry eye or halos. Just make sure you discuss your OR history with the doctor before the surgery, and be prepared to live with possible flare-ups afterwards. She had paid in advance and then when she showed up at the appointment and filled out the medical history, they refunded her money and sent her home. -Barb

Guest guest
I completely agree , it's just too much of a risk to have this done when scarring is such a major issue for us, I would have to know that in someone with EDS who went in with one issue, left completely blind by the experience due to scar issues! Guest guest
It's so hard to know ! This is another example of when knowing about EDS is best and useful to help you make informed decisions. Jill Re: LASIK Eeks! I just keep wondering what would have happened if I got LASIK before I knew had had EDS. Would I have been lucky or would the procedure have been a mess?
