Guest guest
Hello Group Hives There was a post about hives. Still a mystery. Anybody with a similar experience or explanation or prevention tips? First thing in the morning there are hives from the upper neck all the way to the chest and stomach and upper arms. They subside much later - of course who has the time for detailed observations in the morning?
Guest guest
It might be an allergy to your sheets, blankets, detergent, fabric softner, dry cleaning fluid, etc... Just a thought. Guest guest
Never thought about it since I never had it before. But if this does not happen every day, how do we interpret inconsistent symptoms. I would not post these questions, if it could not be something happening to others. Thanks for alerting me
Guest guest
Margaret, Hives can be treated topically with steroid creams that you can get OTC. Also, Benadryl is helpful at night to prevent the itching from keeping you awake. If you have reasons why Benadryl is not an option for you, try Allegra 180. It won't make you drowsy, and does a good job on allergic reactions, of which hives is one. I have found that Allegra (mine is prescription) works very well on my Lupus lesions, and for healing them on the outside, I use Bag Balm. Very soothing, and keeps skin moist while it dulls pain and itching from the outside. It is also antiseptic. For just a lotion, SARNA is best. Available OTC, also. Can be used in quantity, as it is non-steroidal. Always use strong sun screens, wear long sleeves and hats when outdoors...even on overcast days. UV rays are persistent little devils, and they cause more than half of our skin problems with Lupus. Even computer screens, fluorescent lighting, and TV can put out these rays, and cause problems. No kidding. Some of our members advocate herbal teas, accupuncture, and other alternative treatments for specific symptomology. Also, you can check our articles for alternative medicine topics. Keep us posted on your progress, we care what is going on with you. Hugs, MM

Guest guest
Hi Margaret, I get these hives you are talking about and they come and go at different times. I have used a Benadryl lotion on mine. However, I think MM's advice might work better. I had the hives before I started on any medications so I wasn't sure if it was part of the Lupus or something else. I have heard other people talk about having reactions to some of the medications. Is yours from meds or something else? I sure hate it when I get all itchy it gets really miserable at times. I have wondered if it might be from the sun also because I didn't start using sunscreen until I found out about having Lupus and the doctor recommended I use sunscreen and a hat while outside. I hope things get better for you soon and you can get an official diagnosis! Carol > I have not, as yet, been diagnosed with lupus, but from the research > that I have done, I know I have it. Guest guest
Toni, Hives aren't just from food. It could be anything. My son broke out in hives once from being in a room with a live Christmas tree. My younger son breaks out in hives from touching fruit in the grocery store before it's been washed. They make benadryl cream now. I would try putting something topical on it and see if it clears up. If it doesn't, you might consider taking him to the doctor to be sure that he doesn't have a virus of some sort. Guest guest
Hi Toni, Any new meds, supplements, carpets, cleaners etc.? I broke out in hives when I had a new medicine a couple of years ago. Definitely no fun. Guest guest
Toni, My daughter once had hive for a long period of time and finally we found out that it was due to laundry detergent. We had been using the same one forever. She had just suddenly developed a sensitivity to it. The hives went away when we switched to another that is color and frangrance free. Not sure if that helped. > > Hello my son almost 4 years of age and on scd for 2 months has a fiew > hives that first appeared last night calmed down then came back again > after breakfast.Like last night he could not stand his diaper on so I > took it off for a little while.I am pretty sure that he has not had > anything to eat that he hasn't had for the last 2 months.Any advice??? > He is only itchy a little and the hives are mostly around his hips a > fiew on the belly and just a couple around the legs and arm. Guest guest
Have you tried a lidocaine based lotion (a topical anesthetic often sold for sunburns)? As to the underlying cause, have you been tested for food allergies? For a while, my daughter randomly broke out in hives (although never as severe as yours) and it turned out to be allergic to poultry - I believe specifically chicken, but since she was only tested for one kind of poultry she's avoided everything with wings since then. Because she ate chicken every day, and hives were only an occasional thing, we couldn't figure it out by elimination and had to rely on scratch tests.Anyway - in addition to getting rid of the hives completely, taking "everything with wings" out of her diet allowed her to reach complete remission with her UC.Good luck - I remember my sister being in the kind of misery you're experiencing (multiple allergies, playing musical chairs for years, so she constantly had a new allergy to find and deal with). I hope you find some relief. , Mom to 18 yo daughter UC 6/95, PSC 3/09To: Sent: Thursday, April 2, 2009 2:40:23 PMSubject: Hives I'm about to go crazy here with hives. Any ideas? It was explained to me that hives are usually an external manifestation of an internal reaction, and that's why the topical treatments aren't working on mine. I will look into the Zyrtec, though. Anything that would stop this itching. I can see how the lidocaine would do that. I've never used any before (I always used to put noxema on my sunburns!). Is there any particular brand you find better than another? Regarding the allergies -- When they did extensive allergy testing on me some years ago, they found I was allergic to absolutely nothing!!! I just had the slightest reaction to the histamine itself. So, I really don't think this is allergy related though (heaven knows!) I could certainly be wrong about that. Thanks for the suggestions!
