I begin with an apology for the length of this request for help.

There just seem to be so many pieces and I am not sure what is most

important. Please feel free to skip over anything that isn?t relevant

to this group. Thank you for your patience.

Our autistic son is 7 years old. When he was five, we discovered the

then-new Pfeiffer research re: high copper levels in autistic kids and

had him tested. Our pediatrician called and told us he had high

copper levels (220 mcg/dL ref range 25-150) and probably had a

serious disease called ?s disease. I told her I thought he was

just autistic....When they discovered he didn?t have ?s, they

were no longer concerned re: his high copper levels because it ?wasn?t

called anything.? We began giving him 30 mg. of zinc/day, and he

began to wet his pants, screech for no reason, and have what seemed to

be mild absence seizures. We then went to Pfeiffer where he has been

treated for high copper for the past two years. He is very sensitive

so we have had to proceed slowly. Progress has been good, but slow.

We fought yeast for a horrendous year, but things seem to be balancing

out now (Primal Defense seems to have balanced the ?good yeasties?).

He is able to tolerate more foods (he is on GFCF and Feingold diets,

but we have been able to add in things like oranges, apples, and

grapes in small amounts to his great delight). Food allergy testing

in 1/2003 showed only level 1 allergies to a few foods. We are hoping

these positive changes indicates his leaky gut is getting better.

is now in a regular first grade class with an aide. His fine

and gross motor skills are his strengths. He loves to write and gets

A?s on his spelling tests. His social skills are his main challenge,

and he is beginning to avoid social contacts even more because they

make him anxious. His speech is obsessive, but he can have a simple

conversation that lasts a few turns. He has had a wide range of

physical problems including mushy stools (resolved for the moment),

strange rashes, allergies, and a particularly idiosyncratic sore (not

a cold sore) that appeared around his mouth for several years on a

monthly basis. He has a history of fevers with no other symptoms

headaches, and frequent stomachaches. (He does the characteristic

autistic bend-over-the-edge-of-the-couch frequently). He is very

hyperactive, and his OT?s have all said he is the most sensory-seeking

child they have ever seen. He wore a weighted vest for three years

which helped him focus and not push everything off flat surfaces. He

spends a lot of time on his head balanced with his feet on the wall.

The DDI hair testing indicates his total toxic load is off the chart.

We are wondering if more aggressive chelation would be a good idea.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. We have seen dramatic

changes with Houston enzymes, CLO, ABA and Tomatis auditory training.

He is so much better that he is more aware of his differences, and it

is motivating us to go into areas that were more intimidating when he

was younger and nonverbal. Our next outreach appointment with

Pfeiffer is on February 9, and we were hoping to gather as much

information as possible beforehand.

A bit of history (please skip this if it is inappropriately off

topic): I was pregnant with at age 36 and had high blood

sugar during pregnancy. At 36 weeks I was put on bed rest due to low

amniotic fluid (this was difficult because I had a 1 year old). One

week before was born, I had a bad stomach flu and was admitted

to the Maternity ward and given IV saline for 18 hours. He was born

full term one week later. I had pushing contractions almost

immediately that lasted 7 hours even though I wasn?t fully dilated,

and I wasn?t allowed to push. didn?t eat for 24 hours, and

the midwife said that it was probably because the labor had been hard

on him. They finally fed him through a tube. After that, he was a

voracious eater. He nursed until he was three. (I have one amalgam

filling...I also used contact lens solution that probably had

thimerosol in it ).

I was trusting of the medical establishment at that time, and we

agreed to have participate in a vaccine study ? for the

attenuated Polio vaccine. Although he was in the control group, he

was given a completely different vaccine schedule than his brother:

( was born 9/20/96)

11/20/96 APDT (Acellular Pertussis/Diptheria/Tetanus), OMNIHIB

(PRP-T),

OPV (Polio oral trivalent), HepB Recombitant /Chil

01/20/97 APDT, OMNIHIB(PRP-T), HepB Recombitant /Chil

03/21/97 APDT, OMNIHIB(PRP-T), HepB Recombitant /Chil

10/10/97 MMR

11/14/97 DTaP (Diphtheria/Tetanus/A Pertussis)

04/02/98 VARIVAX

He began fluoride drops at 6 mos. At his 18 mo. checkup on April 2,

the pediatrician noted he was ?interactive? but also noted he ?runs

and climbs.? On April 12, the doctor who treated him for

conjunctivitis noted he was ?active.? On June 24, after several

months of prodding by my mom, we took him in to see if there was

anything wrong. Pediatrician noted: decreasing verbal skills,

decreased eye contact, shrill cry, easily frustrated, increased

mouthing of toys and furniture. By then he had begun to act more like

a primate than a human. Literally swung on the chandeliers, always

moving, balancing on the second story balcony railing...Adrenaline

junkie. On July 9, 1998, the developmental pediatrician told us he

was ?probably autistic.?

When was 18 months old, we moved to an area that now seems to

be a ?hot spot? for autism: Out of 770 townhouses, a friend who is

still there estimates there have been about 50 autistic children in

the past several years. It is in an area near the Santa a

Testing Facility, a former Rocketdyne facility that tested rocket

fuel. At this time, various groups are trying to link increased

cancer risk to people who live in the region. Rumor has it that

someone tried to do research tying it to autism, too, but the data

?disappeared.? We moved back to the family home where he was born

when he was 4. The home was built in 1947. We have tested the paint

(no lead) and are looking into testing the water (pipes are copper but

old and probably have lead solder).

Other relevant labs: Great Plains Organic Acid (9/99) increased

glyceric and citric and ascorbic (no

supplements given then), elevated hippuric, normal thymine, decreased

pyroglutamic,

Vaccine titers ? No antibodies to mumps, rubeola. Titers for rubella
