I have a question related to the derivation of

rosacea. I have consistently heard that rosacea is

often an inheritable trait and that it is a genetic

disorder. Is this true? I mean, i know that no one in

my immediate family or my extended family has rosacea

and yet somehow my dermatologist told me that I have a

very mild case of it. So, is it really an inherited

thing or is there some other reason that people get

rosacea?

, the cause of cea isn't yet known. There are a bunch of theories

about what may cause cea. (Lack of certain acids in your digestive

system, sun damage, excess nitric oxide, demodex mites etc). The cause of

cea is probably hereditary to some degree or another, but there can be

other causes for rosacea too, such as steriods etc. I would make sure

though that you do get the rosacea treated asap, because w/out treatment it

will continue to get worse, and eventually become very difficult to get rid

of.

Hope this helps

So, is it really an inherited thing or is there some

other reason that people get rosacea?

Jim,

From what I've been able to gather " rosacea " is a

medical term that is defined by symptoms -- red skin,

with or without bumps, flushing, etc. I don't believe

it is a " disease " by common definition, but rather a

condition. What I've observed on this site is that

people can get there many ways -- and there are lots

of possibilities to explore in the archives.

Some question digestive problems, others social

anxiety, some point to a vascular disorder, thyroid,

hormonal shifts, etc.

My rosacea came about as a result of food allergies,

and I suspect that is the case for many people on this

site -- that they are reacting to food or allergens in

their environment, such as latex pillows, pet dander,

etc. (Or combinations of the above...)

I suspect the number of " pure " vascular cases is

relatively small compared to number of us who have

been (mis)diagnosed and then dismissed to the standard

treatment protocol simply because our symptoms fit the

rosacea definition. Apparently lots of things look

like rosacea -- internal and topical allergies, side

effects from medication, stress reactions, etc.

I've had good results with dietary controls and

minimal medication. I like to suggest some

self-exploration (a food diary, noting symptoms, etc.)

before even considering submitting oneself to lasers

or heavy medications.

These are treatments that can mask some problems while

creating others -- healing some, but hindering others.

I know everyone is looking for the " silver bullet "

that will put rosacea to rest with a pill, cream, or

treatment, but it may exist for only a precious few.

The rest of us will have to make lifestyle changes to

keep it at bay.

Suzi

My father had rosacea. I am the only child to develop it, though. I think

my rosacea and/or the tendency to develop it is definitely hereditary.

When I was diagnosed almost 20 years ago no one else in my family had it.

My 70 year old mother was diagnosed with it last year. Go figure.

I know exactly what caused my rosacea (w/o acneform): excessive facial

blushing and sun exposure. I went spring skiing 16 yrs ago w/o sunscreen

and got badly sunburned. After peeling, my skin had a sun-burned appearance

which remains unchanged to this day. I'm new to the group.

- Same thing in my family.

I was diagnosed about 10 years ago, and my 70-something mother was

diagnosed a couple of years ago. Hers is quite mild compared to mine,

which is really only moderate. I think it's possible that my uncle (my

mother's brother) has it, too (his cheeks are often rather pink), and

possibly one of my sisters.
