Guest guest
Ann, If you do your meals with protein first, then green veggies or other none starchy veggies & some occasional fruit, I don't think you need to worry about counting the carbs. Stay away from bread, white flour products, potatoes, rice, sugar, etc which are mostly starch (carbs) and not much nutrition. Make sure your protein drinks are low carb, low sugar and the carbs will take care of themselves. I am still pre-op, but have basically done that, since discovering that I am allergic to wheat. Avoiding bread, pasta, etc cut all my carb cravings totally improved my blood sugar control. In November my A1C was 8.3 my new result last week was 5.8. The only real change I have made in my diet was removing all the wheat products. Which stopped the carb cravings, which cut down also on my candy intake, because I am not craving carbs and sweets. By eating protein, non-startchy veggies and salads I was able to stop taking my insulin with meals, lower my bedtime insulin dose and lose a little weight all without even meaning to, just by getting the wheat allergy under control. Which turned out to be the biggest cause of my Irritable Bowel Syndrome problem that I have struggled with for 5 years. Dairy is still a bit of a problem, but not as bad. But to get back on track, I had to cut my insulin, because once I took all the wheat/flour & sugar products out of my diet my carb intake became so naturally low, that taking the insuling caused extremely low blood sugar. So don't fret the carbs so much unless you find they become the biggest part of your meals. As long as you follow the protein first rule, then the veggies, then some fruit, the carbs will take care of themself. Seems you are doing OK -- pouch needs time to heal. Half down is about right, from what I recall. Relax - you'll have a LONG time to develop a routine. Good luck.
