Guest guest
Hi : My daughter had moderate plagio...there is mild, moderate and severe as I'm sure you know and she was bordering on severe actually, but classified as moderate. Anyway, like Corey, we started at 10 weeks. We got the Nightform mattress which I highly recommend for anyone with a child under six months, whether they have plagio or not, and it worked wonders for our dd. She was very asymmetrical...facially her forehead, her cheeks and her ears especially were way off. Her asymm. in the cheeks were the least of our worries.....her head at the back was completely parallel. Her coronal sutures were misaligned and protruding. On top of that, she is very pale and bald as an egg, so it was very obvious to everyone...which turned out to be a good thing actually as it propelled us to deal with it seriously. She had serious torticollis, the congenital condition (shortened neck muscle due to inutero positioning) which set all this in motion. We made an appt. with the cranial team at Cedars Sinai in L.A. We had to wait three weeks though. In the meantime we found a PT, the Nightform mattress and a new BabyBjorn, oh and BeBe chair. We were obsessive which you have to be with repo if you want it to work. She napped in the Babybjorn when I didn't have the nightform with me (see www.nightform.com) and I woke her if I saw her sleeping the wrong way...in order to rectify her position....even diaper changes were done with a towel behind her shoulder to tilt her head...a sock of rice was used in the car to repo her, and in the car I put my older child on the side I wanted Sofia (my repo kid) to look in. By the time we went to the Cedars Sinai three weeks later for our first appt., we had already achieved much improvement. Now, she is in the clear...no more repo and we just finished PT too....she goes for check-ups to PT, but not sessions (to ensure no regression occurs). She has an asymm of 0.3 cm which technically the norm....so we're done. As Corey wrote...we all have asymm to a degree, but your cranial team can measure your daughter and tell you if her asymm is considered normal. Repo can be done effectively, but it's all about starting EARLY....so I'd urge you to take steps while waiting for your appt. and then the cranial people will tell you whether or not you need to continue. Repo is a long road, but all the effort is at your end, and not the kid's which is probably a good thing. I mean the baby has to exercise, but they should be doing that anyway (lots of tummy time you know). We did PT six times a day if you can imagine that, and then we had appts. twice a week at the office. It really took over my life. But it was worth it and we achieved complete correction. Best of luck with your appt.....please let us all know how it goes.
