I have scheduled my esophagectomy for Jan. 7th with Dr. Luketich at Pittsburgh Presbyterian hospital. It's a Wed. so we'll probably drive up on Monday,

Michele, check your dates. According to my calendar the 7th

is on a Monday.

Anyway, you've made the big decision. You know all of us will

be here to cheer you on and be praying for you.

Right take deep breaths, and start exercising , You won't have

time to think bad thoughts.

Hugs,

Hi , Wow, you've been scheduled... It's still a long time to go untill January, but it sounds so soon, doesn't it? Do they schedule that long ahead in the US? I won't know untill about one or two weeks pre surgery when it's going to be exactly. Might be the beginning of March, might just as well be the end of April. I do understand why you freak out a bit by putting it on the calendar, it's so definite and sounds so soon, eh? On one hand I wish the surgery would be over and done with tomorrow, on the other I find this time off great. The decision has been made, so no worries on that one any more for me (at least not for now). The practical things have been arranged, so it's time to relax. The surgery is hanging above my head like Damocles's sword (a Dutch vernacular, eh ?), but ever since the decision has been made definitive, things have gotten a

lot easier on me. I sure hope that goes for you too! , you made the best possible decision and are going to be just fine. The freaking out of today is totally natural, but I hope you'll soon be able to relax again. I'll meet with Dr. L on Tues, do some tests and prep and have the surgery on Wed. I have been told to expect 1 night in ICU and 5-7 days in the hospital.I know I've made the right decision but there is something about putting it on the calendar that is freaking me out a bit!!Deep Breaths....Now I need to get my tail in gear and get into better shape in the next 3 1/2 months.I'll keep you all posted as I go through my pre-op testing and all of that fun.Happy Swallowing!- in NC

Hi all,I think I remember reading some posts where kids got their helmets and were told to wear it 23 hours right from the beginning. We got our son's helmet yesterday and were told absolutely not! The wear time has to be gradually increased till day 5 when he will wear it for 23 hours. Otherwise, she said, there is more chance of irritation on the skin. What have you all done? Increased or bam, 23 hours?-- Pearce

I increased, but was in it full time by day 3.....my son had no problems so we were able to keep it on him a little longer in the begining than some other kids. When my orthotist told me about the schedule, I initially thought I would keep it on as long as he would tolerate it, but she told me not too. She said stick to the schedule strictly. I hate it when everyone tells you something different. I'm thinking since so many people here did it longer I may keep it on longer too.

The instructions from Orthomerica for wearing the STARband are very explicit about having a break in period.

Day 3 - on 4 hours/off 1 hour/naps/night
