Yes, stay away from choices 1 and 3. CIB with any kind of milk is high in

sugar, even skim. Ensure and Boost are made to put weight on those who are

unable to eat regular meals, esp elderly patients in long term care or rehab

facilities. Slim Fast has a ton of sugar in it and will make dump. I have

not tried any of the others you have listed, however I know I have seen

others here on the board discuss them. I don't think it matters about the

actual brand you choose, but the one that you can tolerate as far as flavor

and thickness. I like the Stack, chocolate of course, and EAS brand. I can

not drink them as much as I would like unfortunately. Good luck!

-- Newbie ..... protein shakes

Hi everyone, I am new to this group and I am post op 13 days. My Dr gave me

a list of protein drinks to choose from and I was wondering about everyone's

experience/opinion with these:

choose from....

1. 1/2 cup skim milk mixed with 1/2 pkg Carnation Instant Breakfast 2 times

a day (I have read a few post here on this and see it is probably not a good

idea)

2.1 scoop PRO MOD

3.1/2 can slim Fast, Boost or Ensure (if tolerated) 2 times a day

4.1/2 can Atkins 2 times a day (sugar free)

5.Juice Plus (I have a handout for this)

6.Amino 222 liquid

7. Designer Protein (powder you add to food)

I have got to choose something and get this protein started. I wold prefer

to buy locally and not to have order online.

Thanks for any help you can give

> 1. 1/2 cup skim milk mixed with 1/2 pkg Carnation Instant Breakfast 2 times a

day (I have read a few post here on this and see it is probably not a good idea)

*** Thank goodness you've been reading!

> 2.1 scoop PRO MOD

*** Never heard of this one, don't know its stats

> 3.1/2 can slim Fast, Boost or Ensure (if tolerated) 2 times a day

*** These are so bad, they make the Carnation look like a good choice. I took 2

sips out of a Slim Fast once when I was maybe 6 months post-op, and dumped so

bad I wanted to die. Boost and Ensure are designed to keep weight ON people who

don't get enough nutrition -- if you don't want to lose weight, these are a

great choice. If you had the surgery to lose weight, stay away from them.

> 4.1/2 can Atkins 2 times a day (sugar free)

***It's not really enough protein, and not the right kind, but it's a better

choice than what I've seen so far on your list. I use these in a pinch, but they

don't give me the good stuff, and I can tell by how I feel.

> 5.Juice Plus (I have a handout for this)

*** Does this start with fruit juice of any kind? If so, stay away from it.

Juice is full of natural sugars.

> 6.Amino 222 liquid

*** Don't know this one either -- Vitalady might be familiar with it.

>

> 7. Designer Protein (powder you add to food)

*** This is the best of the list, I think (as I said, I don't know 2 of them at

all). the Designer Protein in flavors doesn't have to be added to food, it's a

shake mixed with water.

> I have got to choose something and get this protein started. I wold prefer to

buy locally and not to have order online.

*** I like to buy locally, too, but the problem is that there are very few

vendors who have any clue about the dietary needs of the gastric bypass post-op.

Fitness stores will carry what you need, probably, but they won't know what that

is. GNC carries some as well, but again, their employees probably aren't

familiar with what works best for us.

My suggestion is to try samples (ordered on-line from Vitalady). Everything she

sells is geared to our needs, not those of muscle builders. When you find one

you like, if you still don't want to buy on line, ask your local fitness or

health food store if they will order the product of your choice for you. (I am

extremely fortunate, in that Vitalady IS local for me.)

You are looking for good protein (blended whey with all the amino chains), low

in carbs and sugars, preferably 20-30 grams of protein per serving.

Good luck! Find something you like and GO WITH IT!

Hi Thanks to everyone for taking time to help me :)

I know from a Bariatric Seminar in Memphis Tn that I attended. She is a

great lady with great products but I just prefer not to buy online. I will look

around at Wal-Mart and GNC and sample a few things. But I know that I will be

staying away from the CIB.....

Where can I buy the Stack?

Of those, the only one that would be safe for us is Designer.

2222 is not a complete protein. ProMod is unpalatable to most (if you go that

way, do ProCel instead, more bang for your buck, less flavor/texture).

CIB + moo and the Boost-Ensure group are for weight gain

Atkins is OK numerically, just a really, really expensive way to get a little

protein

No, I didn't forget to comment on Juice Plus

What a great name! Mine is the same! I understand what you mean about buying

online. One thing I do know is that if you have a place in your area that

sells to bodybuilders you can find the whey stack and stuff. GNC does not

usually carry it. GNC does have a great return policy however. Keep your

receipt and if you buy something you do not like even after you try it you

can return it. I use the Problend 55 and bought it from GNC first so in case

I didn't like it I could return it. I now buy it at a nutrition store that

sells to bodybuilders in my area and get it almost $10.00 cheaper than GNC.

I can vouch for #2 the ProMod. This is what was prescribed to me when I had

my surgery over two years ago. In fact, the hospital even served us jello

with the ProMod. I feel I owe alot to the product. In fact, I am very

greatful that the hospital was in even served it us....

It basically doesn't have a taste, can be sprinkled on foods...when mixed

with jello and such is sort of a pain to mix....but I found it good....
