Guest guest
I was thinking the same thing, but about potassium. Aren't tomatoes high in potassium, too, or am I having a senior moment? in NJ ******************** > How's the vitamin A level? worth checking when tomatoes are craved, IME. > > Ziobro > Open RNY 09/17/01 > 310/

BTVC states no canned vegetables. There can be undisclosed sugar in them. The law allows 2% of ingredients do not have to appear on ingredient labels. Carol F. (Assuming this applies to > other vegetables also.) Thanks and take care, Fay Dear Fay, Although SCD does not demand organic food here is my experience this week. I usually but Del Cabo Organic " Grape " Tomatoes. They are oval like grapes. and the same size as grapes and almost as sweet. The store was out of them so I got the same type only conventional ones. They had absolutely no flavor and when the Del Cabo came in again, I gave away the conventional tomatoes. Carol F. Guest guest
How do we know, then,if there is any undisclosed sugar in the legal tomato juice? And what if we contact the company and they confirm no added ingredients? a H. > > Does anyone know why tomato juice is ok, but canned tomatoes or jarred > > tomato sauce is not? > > a H. > > BTVC states no canned vegetables. Guest guest
With regards to the canned tomatoes... What needs to be done is to ask the company to provide in writing, on real paper, a complete list of ingredients for the products that you are interested in purchasing. In all likelihood, it will be easier to find a canned tomato puree and canned tomatoes (diced, whole, etc) that will have no added ingredients than it will be for you to find a ready-made spaghetti sauce. So, call Muir Glenn and ask them to mail information to your home address. Tell them that you need to know ALL of the ingredients in their tomato products in writing. If they provide it for you, then that's great. But something like Amy's pasta sauce, the ingredients are gathered from a variety of sources, many of which could be very difficult to track down to prove that there were no illegals added at any point in the processing of any of the ingredients. But you are welcome to try to get the same information from Amy's. Let us know what you find out. Jody mom to -7 and -9 SCD 1/

" but feel I know my SCD a tad better than Digestive Wellness that used to offer illegal Pomegranate Juice as SCD compliant. We have had to keep an eye on them. I do think they have good intentions. They do a service but I do myself a better one! I put the tomato sauce on to simmer while I do the housework. I am an early riser and yesterday made yogurt, tomato sauce, mayonnaise and muffins before 8:00 a.m. Carol F ..

They're here to help people that don't have the time to cook the sauce with a ready made sauce. Their service is great, and the food available on their site is fantastic. Many SCD'ers wouldn't be able to make it through without them. I'm actually a little surprised with this comment. > > Dena, There is a difference between good intent and scientific knowledge. Esther Weiss at DW has been most co-operative in checking with us on various questions about product but they are not the final authority on what is legal. I will not dictate what people may choose to use but I don't want to be confrontational about DW products and they well may be compliant but the only ones I can personally vouch for are J.Gourmet. ( I have no$$ interest in any of them.) The only non homemade products Elaine approved as SCD are J. Gourmet. There was a time when DW was advocating all products as SCD (including illegal pomegranate juice) and as has been stated some products are not suitable for beginners, But does DW specify that? We do suggest if you are able and can afford it.. to hire a helper or conscript a friend to cook large batches whic can be frozen for you..under your supervision. Keep a journal so if things don't go well you can eliminate anything that is suspicious. Carol F.

Pouring tomato juice into a pot and adding a little basil and oregano is ( as Jody said of preparing yogurt) easier than Mac 'n Cheese. Making yogurt i's something we all have to do ourselves. Mayo? Combining an egg, lemon juice, mustard and oil in a blender or food processor is hardly rocket science. If you study the basic recipes in BTVC (which really are great) you will find few ingredients and fewer complicated procedures to follow and guaranteed good results at less expense. Making tomato sauce takes me less time than making an order on the Internet or by phone. Fortunately we all have the choice of either. Carol F.
