Guest guest
Carol My hat goes off to you! I always thought about making baby food, but frankly I was way to lazy for it! I don't know, but I would think that by using your vacuum sealer that the baby food would stay great! I think I would go for it! By the way- do you think that the vacuum sealer was worth the money? I've been thinking of buying one, but know no one who uses one! Not big on spending money on something that will set in the cabinets! Trish (CO)Kayla (5)- No allergies (4)- E/A (2)- anaphlyatic to egg, severely allergic milk, peanuts, all tree nuts, soy, other foodsE/A including dogs & cats. Asthma & eczema OT.. Home made baby food? Hi ladies... since this is a "safe" food group LOL, I thought I might ask... (since I am expecting DD#2 soon!)... I am thinking of making as much of this baby's food as I can.. I tried with Sara, but didnt have a steamer at the time, and I guess I just wasnt as motivated... but now with some time on my hands before the baby comes, I was wondering if it was reasonable to start making & freezing some things now? I have a foodsaver vacuum sealer, so I can vacuum lots of stuff and it should keep for several months, right? Anyone have any suggestions? : ) TIA! Guest guest
LOL Trish... Keep that hat on until we find out if I actually manage to follow thru! LOL ; ) That is kind of why I want to start now... because NOW I am motivated... who knows how I will feel 6 mos from now LOL : ) About the foodsaver, I really like it. Its is awesome for marinating (since I often forget to do so, or dont plan meals that far in advance!)... and DH hunts, so it keeps our meat from getting freezer burned (I can only eat so much venison in a given time LOL)... and I love the canisters for all of my baking supplies - keeps the bugs out (and now that I am having to make from scratch many items, I have much more of that stuff around!) I still buy freezer bags for stuff I know we will eat within the month (like ground beef & chicken)... but now I can buy larger quanities and know they wont go bad : ) Definately worth it for us! Guest guest
Carol Where are you from? I'm sure you've said, but I can't remember! My dh hunts also. It has been a bad year for him though. They (his brother and dad) never were able to get anything! They all had Elk & deer but just couldn't bring home the meat! I myself, not that sad about it! I prefer beef! I grew up with cattle all around me! We had a side of beef every year! So I had "home-grown" beef! I may have to look into getting me one of those food savers! We always buy in bulk- cheaper that way. It would also be nice to make up HUGE batches of muffins, cookies, ect..... and freeze some for Sam! I think you mentioned you are due with this baby in March? Is that right? And, did you say a baby girl? How is pregnancy going? Is the family excited about this baby coming? I keep thinking that maybe some day I'll have another baby- Kayla and would love it! I"m not sure Sam would be as thrilled though! Guest guest
About the foodsaver, I really like it. Hi Carol, Which food saver do you have? About how much are they, if you don't mind my asking? I've thought about it as I'm throwing salad out the next day, or so because it's starting to turn brown, but always thought they were really expensive. Thanks, DonnaShane - asthma - allergic to dairy, eggs, pickles, and olives. Minnesota

Guest guest
My Foodsaver is the Vac820.. the link here is to the 800.. but is is pretty similar in function and price.. it came with some bags and a canister too... http://www.tilia.com/foodsaver_vac800.cfm You can get them at Walmart, Target... even BJs and Sams Clubs have them now.. you dont have to order them from TV... so I would shop around.. but most prices will be within dollars of eachother. My model is "in between".. there are some that cost more and some that are less... I like that mine has the storage for bags and the hose for the canisters. I am really glad we have it, and am finding more uses for it! : ) Good luck!Carol & Sara - Severe excema allergy to eggs, minor shellfish Re: OT.. Home made baby food? Guest guest
Trish, we are from Buffalo, NY.. we own some land about 30 miles away that DH hunts on... no game bigger than deer out there (occasional bear, but he dont shoot LOL, he runs!!) ; ) Seriously, though, I dont think he has ever seen anything bigger than a deer.. but they deer and turkey hunt there. He got 2 small bucks this year.. but I still prefer beef LOL.. especially pregnant... the texture is different, so it is a bit more difficult to stomach!!! : ) Yes, we are expecing our second child (a girl!) 3/27/04... so I have about 7 weeks to go! Hopefully the weather here will break by then and I wont have to bring the new baby home during an ice storm! Sara is very excited... she talks about it every day.. and the whole family cant wait either : ) On my side alone, (as opposed to DH's) we have exploded from 0 to 6 kids in barely 4 years!! So lots of new babies in the family! : ) Good luck on the foodsaver... If you missed my last post about which one I have, it can been seen here... http://www.tilia.com/foodsaver_vac800.cfm : ) Carol & Sara - Severe excema allergy to eggs, minor shellfish OT.. Guest guest
Carol We live in the foothills of Colorado. We own 7.5 acres of land, but live on famliy land (dhs parents and brother & SIL live within walking distance of our house) that equals about 65 acres, bordered by National Forest on 3 sides of us- so it is like our land doesn't end. We have lots of deer, some turkey (unless dh wants to hunt it) and now and then elk, but usually he has to go elsewhere for that! Two years ago we had a bear that would come right up to the house looking for food. We were in a severe drought and there was nothing for them to eat. Needless to say- the kids didn't play outside much that year (and NEVER without one of us with them). If you have your baby on the 26th- we would share a birthday! I hope things go quickly for you! Guest guest
It should keep for several months, but personally I'd hold off on making it now. Because Sara has food allergies I would hold off on starting any other children on solids until about 6 months. My littlest one refused all solids until she was 9, almost 10 months old. I'm not sure if it would last that long. I do know that it helps to freeze it in an ice cube tray and then pop those out and transfer to another bag for storage. I think each cube is about an ounce. My kids never liked homemade baby food. Not the right texture or something ----- Original Message ----- Hi ladies... since this is a " safe " food group LOL, I thought I might ask... Guest guest
Trish, If you buy in bulk at the warehouse stores and/or cook in batches (2 friends and I get together about every six weeks) then it is WELL worth the investment. I save my bags and wash them so that cuts down on the cost a bit. We have had ours for about 2 years and I love it. Recently I bought a huge box of oatmeal and I've transferred some to a canister that can be used with the food saver. I keep it in a drawer right below where I use it so it is quick and easy to pull out and hook it up. And the kids (and I) think it is awesome to put marshmallows in a jar and seal it up *G* I bought the attachment that will seal lids on canning jars (not safe for perishable food that won't be refrigerated!!) and they beg to play with it. It can keep them occupied (and out of trouble) for about an hour. LOL ----- Original Message ----- By the way- do you think that the vacuum sealer was worth the money? I've been thinking of buying one, but know no one who uses one! Not big on spending money on something that will set in the cabinets! Guest guest
Tip on using it with muffins, etc. Make sure you get one that has a manual override to quit the vacuum and seal. Otherwise your muffins are very, very flat. Yes, experience is a good teacher. Also, I can't remember if the rest of the family uses dairy since Sam is allergic, but shredding a huge block of cheese and putting it in the fridge (or freezer) is great, but again, allow a little air to remain or use one of the canisters. The cheese will be a block again and it is much more difficult to shred the 2nd time around. ----- Original Message ----- I may have to look into getting me one of those food savers!
