Guest guest
Ouchies, Sally, I feel for you! I have had Cipro since my surgery and did fine on it when I ate when I took the med. On an empty pouchie, it burned and made me rather nauseated. So try eating something with it, or a half hour before taking the med. Cystitis happens.I believe it has something to do with our anatomical design. ~grins~ Get better soon and take ALL of your antibiotics! Love and smoogles, jeanne in georgia OT Question I'm asking here because there are more long-timers here than on my other lists... Seems I have a bladder infection. How anyone can get a bladder infection when religiously drinking 64 oz of water/day is beyond me, though my doctor said maybe I wasn't going frequently enough and I do have to admit that sometimes I get sidetracked and have to put it off. But it just blows my mind - I haven't had one of these in years. At any rate, I'm going to be given Cipro for it, which my PCP thinks will be fine for my pouch, but I wanted to check with you guys and see if you've ever taken it and if there's anything I should be aware of. I'm taking it for 3 days (she's calling in an oral suspension too, instead of the coated capsules) and if I still have symptoms, I'm to continue for 5 days. Guest guest
I take Cipro regularly. The whole bloated pouch, bacteria build-up, 7-months pregnant looing thing, lol. Most post-ops do well with a round of Flagyl every six to eight weeks or so, but of course not me. I had to go the Cipro route, like the small minority I always seem to belong to Cipro is great (at least, for me it is). I take the lowest dosage (2x per day, 250mgs per pill, I believe). I take it for about five days, then I'm fine for six to eight weeks. Voila, no pain, no bloat, no pregnancy due date. I know you will be taking it for a whole other reason, but hey, I just wanted to chime in that it is a great drug. The people taking it for Anthrax had to take mega dosages, that is why some of them had a reaction. It really is a fantastic antibiotic. I believe it is the strongest on the market, which is why it's so unbelievably expensive. As far as the bladder infection goes, that OTC cranberry pill might help as well. If your doctor will allow you to add something else. I believe it's called Ozo or similar to that. I used it before and it worked really well, but mine was a very low level UTI. Good luck Sally! Guest guest
Sally, I took the Cipro caplets for about 3 months straight after developing a post op wound infection. Not a problem with the pouch. I will say the taste was really bad (especially after cutting them in 1/3 to swallow). I found taking it with V-8 or tomato juice helped immensely. Thanks ) Actually, there was nobody who had an oral suspension of Cipro, so we ended up going with Plan B - Bactrim. So I've been taking that for a couple days now. It makes me a little queasy so I take it with food, but so far it hasn't been bad. Hopefully this will clear up and I can be 100% next week for my college graduation ) Sally 298 (BMI 49)/-120/178 Goal: 150 lap RNY 7/10/02 Dr. Quinlin/Pittsburgh
Guest guest
Hi Sally, I developed an infection of some sort....never did find out what, but I landed back in the hospital 24 hrs after coming home when I had my RNY surgery last August and after 3 days in the hospital on IV Cipro, I came home from the hospital on Cipro too....so I'd say in terms of the pouch, if it's safe for a new pre-op, then it's probably safe for a longer time post op. Hope you feel better.....try some watered down cranberry juice...or that new OTC cranberry based nutritional supplement. Guest guest
Hi Sally, I get UTI's seems every year or two. The last two I had I took care of without any meds. Not suggesting you do that..you do what your PCP tells you to. I did it as an experiment out of curiousity. But I will say I was successful with doing some research on the net and found taking cranberry pills (I can't handle the watered down juice as much as you need for cleansing), Vitamin C, aged garlic pills, vitamin A, zinc and tons of water ended up working. Some ppl get them regularly, others don't. Even with your cipro, I'd still take those vitamins just for nice backup. I am not a doctor but the last time I used a doc to get rid of it, she told me there are different types of UTI's. I guess women can get them different ways and they require different antibiotics to get rid of it depending on what strain of bacteria is present. Several times it took me 2 or 3 different antibiotics to get rid of it. ARGH! So that is what motivated me to go read about it and see if I could nail it another way. Good luck . Sherra PS. I'm especially interested in treating things without meds - wasn't aware that you could get rid of them this way - good to know for the next time! Now I'm just trying to manage the GI Upset of the anitibiotics with (don't look ) yogurt, which seems to be working. I did pick up some cranberry extract pills (can't handle the juice either) and have been taking those as well. I knew that this one had gone beyond self-treatment due to my symptoms, but now that I know I can still get them even with the volumes of water I'm drinking, I'll be a little more attentive to the symptoms.
