Guest guest
Hi Kate: I don't know what my lab works showed because I was supposed to have them done yesterday, but my insurance will no longer cover them there (they are out-of-network), so I have to go to my PCP and have them done here in the next week. I know that my labs at 9 months were all good and I have since had surgery (unrelated to my weight loss) and the labs were all good then, so I'm sure they will turn out fine. Will that be more of an indicator than anything else? Thanks for you reply. Hugs, Jerri in MI

My question to you guys is should I continue to take in the higher protein amount or should I follow the nutritionist and lower my protein intake? ----------------------------------- Well, some nutritionists don't seem to be much more knowledgeable than the docs. And I think it may also depend on whether the nutritionist is part of the " team " and takes her orders from the docs. In my case, when the nutritionist was STILL recom- mending Tums and Viactiv (over everything else), MONTHS after I'd shown her all the research I'd found saying otherwise, she said she knew calcium citrate was probably better for " us " but that she had to " go with the program " the docs had approved. And " my " docs had only approved some kind of protein booster (not shake mix) from just ONE company, and anyone who ever bo't it ended up throwing it away or giving it away after just a couple of tries bcuz it was so unpalatable. Now if you're talking protein intake from FOOD only, and you're getting a whole lot of protein from food alone, maybe there's a point. (You'd have to just about be eating nothing BUT protein to get too much, I think, bcuz how much food can u hold, anyway)? Too much protein from food CAN be hard on your liver and kidneys. SHAKES, however, are different; the protein is pre-digested and much easier on those organs. If you're maintaining your weight loss on your current protein intake, and it's all coming from FOOD, then maybe you want to try substituting some protein shakes for some of the food. You get a lot more protein in a shake for less calories than you do from food anyway. Many docs/nutritionists recommend a minimum of 60g protein a day as a good target to shoot for. I think this is way too low. The reason is that we don't know how many of the 60g u consume actually get absorbed, so I'm convinced we need to " do extra g's " to compensate for that (just like we have to take more vitamins than a " normal " person for the same reason: malabsorption). Another reason is that I've come across websites of various bariatric surgeons who are recommending as much as 180g protein a day! I " do " 120g in shakes every day and then eat whatever the heck I feel like eating bcuz I know I'm getting in enuf protein and I don't have to omit fruits and veggies and grains so I can get in the required amt of protein from food sources. My personal opinion is that the protein SHAKES keep me healthy and energized and not hungry, so I don't over-eat. Gaining weight is simply a function of taking in more calories than you expend. So if u eat too many calories, no matter whether from protein or veggies or fats or whatever, u will gain. We all get lazy after awhile and it becomes hard to " stick with it " or we just simply forget what we're supposed to keep doing for the rest of our lives: I think that's what's at work with most of the regaining. There are PLENTY of post-ops out there who do 4-5 shakes or more a day and haven't regained an ounce. Each case is individual, and u have to experiment and see what works best for YOU. Forget the docs and the nutritionists and all the well-meaning advice (yeah, even from busybodies like me) and find out what works for you. Then do that. For the rest of your life. Guest guest
<> I think that should be your guiding factor. If your protein is high, then you might be able to afford scaling back a bit on the consumption. If it is in the mid or low normal range, I would not personally scale back. I am disappointed (but not surprised) that a nutritionist would make that recommendation without having the 12 month labs in hand. I am wondering what her reason for wanting to reduce the protein level is: too many calories? Kate

Guest guest
Hi Kate; Yeah, I was sort of surprised about that, too. I think the main reason why they recommend you lower your protein intake now is that you no longer need it for healing and for loss muscle mass and that you now need to incorporate more veggies and fruits into your diet. If you are eating all that protein, you won't have room for the veggies or fruits. It does make sense to me, but it's still confusing. But like someone on my other support group told me, every body is different and you need to do what works best for you personally. I'll wait to see what my labs show and then go from there. They also said that I only need to do my labs annually now, but I am planning on sticking with every 6 months just to keep an eye on them. Since my insurance company will cover them through my PCP, I might as well. Thanks again, Kate. I really appreciate your input. Guest guest
Thanks, Carol, you answered it in a way that I can understand (yeah, I am the " no jargon " lady! LOL). I am waiting for the results of my 1 year labs and then will decide how to proceed. Right now I am getting in about 60-70 grams of protein a day and about 75% of that is from foods. So far that amount seems to agree with me, but I want to see what the labs show. The lowering the amount of protein rule seems to be the way they do it where I had my surgery, so it doesn't sound like it is tailored to the individual. I appreciate your e-mail and your input. Thanks for taking the time. Hugs, Jerri in MI

Guest guest
Deborah, I enjoy the " Good Sense " brand of soynuts. I don't know if they are identical to the ones you have but here are the stats on them: Serving Size - 1/3 cup (1oz.) Calories - 130 Carbohydrates - 10g Protein - 9g Fat - 7g Not too bad a snack according to the stats! Guest guest
, I think you'd need to post the ingredients for those on the board to know - plus the breakdown of nutrients that show up on the box. (And how do you make it - milk or water?) Pam Protein Question Hello Everyone, I have a question, but first let me introduce myself. My name is , I had my surgery 07/25/02 and have had no complications (which I consider myself very fortunate). My diet plan is protein only until I reach 75% of my excess weight loss. I'm recommended to have 3 protein meals a day (food) and supplement a protein drink occassionally. My doctor suggested only 2 protein powders, Isopure and Met-RX Amp60 (met-rx use only 1/2 the pkg at a time). I have purchased samples from Vita-Lady so I could have a bigger selection to choose from and I have no problem with most of them, their OK. The one that I like the most is Met-RX Amp60 and I haven't seen this one mentioned on the board. Is this protein, in your valued opinon a good choice? Just wanted to hear your views on this. I really enjoy reading this board you all have so much to share and I for one am very grateful that I found you all. Thanks, Open RNY-7/25/02 Dr. Marema SW 294 CW 196 GW

I didn't like whey shakes at all and used soy until then and then I hated the soy and started liking whey. Go figure! Angie in SC

Guest guest
I have, and am using them both right now. They are both very good but each has its own speacial flavor. I think the stack tastes like milk with nestles quick. I am just over 4 months post op myself. I have never had the experience that you are having with that vanilla. Weird things do happen to our taste buds and senses after this surgery though. They are usually temperary. Why don't you just set the new jug aside for a month. Maybe whatever it is will pass. THere is no use forcing yourself to drink it if it is making you sick. Stick to the chocolate for a while. Good luck. Guest guest
I was wondering if someone could tell me if I use vanilla protein powder in a recipe can I still count the protein in my daily protein count or does cooking with it make it not count? I bought a low carb cook book and she gives the total protein count for each recipe but I don't know if she is aware of the cooking factor for the protein powder. Any help is appreciated. I love reading all the post on here I have learned so much....and cooking the bacon in the oven is a super idea. I cooked a pound of it on Monday and it is almost gone. Just enough left for breakfast tomorrow. Thanks again.
