Hello Donna, so sorry to hear about your holiday mishap. You know, for

any of us, falls can spell danger. I have phones just about everywhere

in case I need help. Trust you will mend in time and rest well.

Hey Ya'll:

Been a while since I've responded !!! Gretchin : I

mostly fall forward, but not just to my knees. I have

fallen and fractured my wrists from my knees locking and I

just fall straight forward with no giving of the knees !!!

I have also lost my balance and fell backwards but usually

try to sit when I'm going over backwards !!!

I am begining to have alot of wrist and hand problems due

to my CMT !!! They are weak and it's hard to hold on to

small objects, such as ink pens, silverware, ETC:!!! Can

anyone relate to these problems???

Hi Cindy, nice to hear from you.

I don't fall (yet), but when she was in her late 70s my mom took some really

hard falls, such as down a flight of concrete stairs. Everyone was amazed

that she didn't ever break any bones. A lifetime of drinking milk every day

helped I think, as well as sturdy heredity. Her bruises were really something

to see though, huge areas of blue/black. She fell in any direction. When she

decided to use a cane, then a walker, most of her falls stopped.

I usually fall frontwards and catch myself with my hands. I am

these years of injuring them that they still work as well as they do!

I can go for months without falling and then fall two or three times

Hi! I have CMT Type 2 and have always bruised easily. My shins and

calfs are always marked up. My 9-yr old daughter Katey is following right

in my footsteps! She gets bruises and can't remember what she did to

receive them. She has a large beauty right now - it runs from below her

knee all the way up her thigh. We think she may have gotten it at school

during recess but we're not sure!

Hi Kat,

I live in Memphis. I have been falling frequently since I was a

small child. I am 52 now. When I was a child my parents just

thought I was clumsy! I wasn't diagnoised until I was 21. I too

have taken some pretty bad falls in my life and often. I am so

thankful to God that I haven't broken anything yet. I know that when

people see all the ugly bruises on me they think I have been in a

fight! I bruise easy anyway and so does my daughter who has CMT. I

have often wondered if bruising so easily is because of the CMT? I

can just barely touch my skin and I will get a big bruise!

My dad who died at the age of 89 also took a lot of falls and bruised

very easily. Although he was never diagnoised with CMT we think that

he may have had it in a minute form. He was an extremely active and

fast little man who could run and walk like you wouldn't believe. At

89 he could still get around better than most people. The only

reason we even thought that he could possibly have CMT was because he

did have weak ankles and as a child sprained them a lot. Plus he was

very hard of hearing just like me and my daughter which seems to go

along with CMT. In the last week I have learned more about my CMT and

the many different things that are related to this disease than I

have since I was diagnoised thirty years ago.

Just to show how contrary CMT can be, I have CMT Type 2 and I rarely have a

bruise. It takes a pretty hard hit to affect me. My mom only bruised badly

when she was elderly, and that was from serious falls.

You folks probably fit typical CMT 2 far better than I do. I have 16 inch

calves, too, (with muscles I can ripple), which isn't common with many CMTers.

Kat

Strange, isn't it.
