Annie Atkinson, from SW Missouri; my 13 year old son has Juvenile Diabetes, diagnosed a year and a half ago. I almost lost him. Hi Annie, you have just hit the mother lode of softies! I have 6 kids, have had 45 foster kids and am expecting my 7th grandchild soon. They are the soft spot in my life. I truly understand where you say you would take his load in a heartbeat. Annie, I know you know the Bible. I also know you know He will place no more burden than your son can carry. I know sometimes you wish He didn't trust you so much! ;-) Been there my self ;-) The fact that your son is intelligent beyond his years speaks well of him and of you, I admire the job of homeschooling him you have done, it has set him into a place in his life that he is able to a lot of his diabetic care himself. I am sure he knows a lot about his diabetes, not just the day to day care. If he has not studied this burden, I urge you to help him do so. I can recommend sites that hold great knowledge, and compassion for the people who have this to deal with. Just let me know your needs and I will try to set up a good match. Annie, have you any special recipes that might appeal to kids? I know your husband also is a diabetic, and you have a family to feed. I truly recommend HealthyExchanges@... This is a group developed by Jo Lund. She lost both her parents with diabetes, and decided she was going to find a way to make " normal " meals for diabetics, as her parents were so totally disappointed with life and eating due to their diabetes. They did not have access to the BGkits we have today, so had to just deprive themselves of just about everything they enjoyed. So Jo put her heart and soul into it and has many recipe books. Her site is excellent, also. Not the diabetic info that you will find here, but great recipes. A few are too carby, so I do not post them to these sites. I usually have a 45 carb per meal max, and let people adjust from there themselves. Her archives are stuffed with recipes, all available to the members. She has a book called 'Eating Healthy with the kids in Mind " it is great, family fare. Also easy to portion control, which has to be one of the biggest problems we as Americans face. I understand other countries are catching up though. I look forward to visiting again, welcome to the site, always good to expand the family.
