Hi Beth, you have questions, we have answers! Type one used to be called

juvenille diabetes. Now, because of the obesity problems we see in children and

young people, we see children with type 2. Type two used to be found only in

adults, many older, with sedentary lifestyles. Now, let me say that is not

necessarily the case. There are other markers for type 2. Did you have a

parent, grandparent or other relative with diabetes? That is called a marker.

Are you overweight? Sedentary? These are all markers for diabetes. Sometimes,

there is no seeable reason someone has diabetes. Their siblings have a

greater chance of becoming a diabetic. Lots to learn. I really recommend you

going

to the bookstore, and buying a book called Diabetes for dummies by Dr.

Rubin. He is an easy to understand author, and gives answers to questions you

don't even know enough to ask yet. While you are there, I would look around at

special cook books and pick up a copy of Jo Lund's HealthyExchanges for

Diabetics. She gives a great pantry list, things you need to have on hand for

the

new and improved cooking and eating you will be doing ;-) She is not going

to tell you you can never have anything you want to eat again! She is just

going to help you find an easier way to better results. There is so much more,

but this will get you started :-) If money is an issue, go to the library.

Your diabetes society is a great resource, too. Pharmacists can answer most

questions in a pinch. You will be okay, we'll be here to help you over the
