At least ask the doc about the possibility of Humalog (insulin lispro)(short-acting) + Lantus (insulin glargine)(24-hour, no-peak basal) for basal + mealtime coverage with multiple injections. Some call it the " poor man's pump " and I've been happy with the combination for 2 1/2 years (switched from Regular and/or Regular+Ultralente which caused me lots of high/low probs). Studying the insulin time/activity charts will show you why you get the peaks/valleys with Novolog 70/30 and you can compare that, as well as get a ton of info (to do your homework before seeing your doc) from the pharma company sites. Check out and compare the insulin activity charts at: Lilly (makes Humalog and many other types) http://www.lillydiabetes.com/using_insulin/what_types_of_insulin.jsp?reqNavId=3.\ 3 http://www.lillydiabetes.com/product/humalog.jsp?reqNavId=5.1 Novo Nordisk (makes Novolog 70/30 and others) (I read a little bit and it looks like the mixtures are often used for " new " diabetics. 70/30 looks like it has 3 peaks . . . and if your life/eating/activity doesn't mesh with the predetermined timeline of those 3 peaks, that's what makes for lots of peaks/valleys.) http://www.novologmix70-30.com/consumer/treating/works.asp http://www.novologmix70-30.com/consumer/treating/right.asp Lantus (24-hour, no-peak) Look at both the " professional " and " patient " areas to get the most info. http://www.lantus.com Do your homework and Good Luck!
