I know just how you feel, Cheryl, but the dreams don't do much good except arouse false expectations that can never be safely fulfilled. Our autonomous nervous system controls how much goes into and how much is taken out of our fat tissue and we cannot intervene in the process with willpower. All we can do is to produce the external conditions that will cause certain body functions to decide to burn some fat. Just remember that you will be fighting against many millions of years of evolution and that your enemy has the ability to inject hormones directly into the innermost parts of your brain. The only weapon you have is your intelligence - that is why the more you can learn about physiology and metabolism and cell biology and organic chemistry, the bigger is your advantage. If you already have some idea of those subjects and want to go Googling, try " energy homoeostasis " , which is the name of the game. Don't be put off when you see that most of the work is done on rats and mice - they have energy regulation systems that are very similar to ours and can be cut open to see what is going on! The entire fat storage regulation is made with a large number of inter- connected closed control loops, some of which in our case are mal- functioning. The main things we can do are to: 1. Eat a wide selection of natural foods with high nutritional value and low energy content. Those are mostly fruit and vegetables. You can start off by deciding not to buy any more convenience foods in packets. They have had almost everything nutritious taken out of them because those are what most limit the shelf life. This won't make you any thinner but it will help you stay healthy when you reduce your food intake. 2. Get in some real exercise. You have to build up to it over months, starting with five minutes a day and slowly working up to an hour a day, every day. This is exercise against a resistance, even if it is only gravity, like climbing stairs whenever you can. Just strolling around the block for 30 minutes, 3 days a week won't do it. Without exercise your chances of losing any weight are very much less. The intensity has to be just below or at the sweating level, just before you start to pant or breathe through your mouth. The exercise is in addition to and not instead of, all the work you usually do in the day! Real tough! 3. Start to think in terms of months and years instead of days and weeks. Nothing much sustainable is going to happen very quickly. 4. Learn some of the theory of metabolism and physiology. The Internet is loaded with it, some of it is useful some of it is nonsense - or even a cruel scam, you are mostly on your own, the general rule being that if it costs money, you don't need it. My recommendation would be to start at: http://www.weightlossforall.com/ The guy is selling a book but it is a soft sell and you don't need to buy it. He provides a lot of information that appears to me to be sensible. I won't wish you luck because luck has nothing to do with it, I will wish you an iron discipline, tireless perseverance and a bitter determination - those are what you need to succeed! Guest guest
Cheryl: Unless you ave some metabolic disease, losing weight is a matter of mathematics. You take in more than you burn, you are going to gain weight. I have been a member of weight loss support groups for literally years and some of the things I have learned are are: 1) There is NO magic pill to make you lose weight.( If there was, there would be no fat people. 2) Exercise DOES matter. You can lose weight wihout exercising, but exercise helps speed up the process and makes you healthy and strong. 3) You have to have ATTITUDE.......you need to want to lose weight and believe that you can succeed. I used to feel I failed every time I ate something bad..I had to learn that you have to accept there will be times we are going to " slip " a little so you work thoses little " treats " into your plan. 4) DO NOT use the word diet!. It suggests right away deprivation....instead, Change you eating habits for life. I found incorporating weight trainig into my plan was the best thing I could do. It helps tone your muscles, which in turn burn fat at a faster rate and for a longer peroid of time than fat. Plus it helps take the pressure off those aging joints (for us older folk)You need not go into a extensive routine. Start small , work up. The only successful way to lose weight and keep it off is to Eat healthy and in Moderation, Exercise your body, mind and spirit. I am 51 , overweight but I am back on track again and I work out three times a week, drive my bike to work each day (6 miles one way) and because my boyfriend is a newly diagnosed type 2 and I have just been diagnosed with impaired fasting glucose, we try to watch what we eat.I have also learned it is like quitting smoking...sometimes you have to try more than once to succeed.I will never be a Barbie doll figure.I just want to feel good and stay healthy. I have tons of info on weight trainging, weight loss etc..if you want you can email me off list at stargatersg1@.... Maybe we should start a group on here for weight loss...LOL I mightlook into that.... Be safe....
