Guest guest
Hello! , I'm in the same boat. I was also diagnosed at type 1 in my 20's (21) and am now 26. The doctor wants me to weigh 135 (prediagnosis weight) but since being on insulin i am really having a hard time losing the weight. Shouldn't 10 lbs be easy????? Like you, I exercise every day (gym, walking, high energy/activity job) and I eat well but the weight just won't come off. My endo doc told me that after looking at my eating and exercise regime that it must be the insulin. He explained that insulin causes sugar to be moved from the blood into the cells which causes all of your intake calories to also be moved into the cells and then convert to fat. His advice: If I have a little extra food in my meal or my numbers are running a little higher to NOT take those extra few units of insulin but to do something active to try to bring the number down naturally. Also, I find that my numbers will spike after exercise and i was correcting a lot with insulin where as it tends to come down naturally a few hours later. If I did take the extra insulin then suddenly I was hypo and needing to take in more calories....what a vicious cycle! I've only been using this advice for a week now and I have yet to lose any weight but I do feel a bit less bloated so we'll see what happens i guess. Guess, check, recalculate, guess again, recheck, recalculate... ________________________________________________________________________ Message: 11 Date: Tue, 27 Jul 2004 03:46:11 -0000 Subject: Hello from a new member Hi everyone, My name is and I have recently joined the group. I was diagnosed type 1 diabetic back in January of 2003. I was 29 at the time and the diagnosis came as a complete shock. I thought I was in the best shape of my life. Funnily enough, at the time of my diagnosis I was trying to get pregnant and found out on the same day that I was in fact pregnant. After a rather stressful pregnancy, I had a healthy baby boy. He is almost 10 months now and is just fabulous. Adjusting to a diabetic lifestyle has been really hard, I was on a very strict routine during my pregnancy so I have been trying to relax a bit since his birth but I suppose my life will never be the carefree one it was before I was diabetic. The one thing I was wondering if anyone out there could help me with is a question regarding my weight gain. I am currently 10lbs heavier than before the baby. I don't know if it is because of the pregnancy or the insulin, (maybe both). I have heard that people on insulin tend to gain a bit of weight. Has anyone experienced this? I excersise daily and eat well (with the occasionaly treat). I just feel that despite my best efforts the weight won't budge. I look forward to participating in this active and informative group. Yours TANYA ________________________________________________________________________
