Guest guest
Thanks, Moria. >>If you want you could post your level for plasma cysteine and also the reference range listed. (Make sure that it is plasma CYSTEINE with an E in the middle, not CYSTINE.)<< I've been reading the explanation at Great Smokies and scratching my head. Under Phase II Plasma Cysteine, the reference range is 3.10 to 3.90 and my number is 2.95 If you look under ratios (this is what confuses me), the Plasma Cysteine/Sulfate ref range is 0.60 to 0.78 and my number is 0.85. So my cysteine is low, but my ratio is high? But you're asking me about the first one, the 2.95, which would explain why I feel good on ALA? So I should theoretically do okay on NAC? Thanks again, Marsha

So I should theoretically do okay on NAC? theoretically (using Andy's theory, as I understand it), yes, this may be part or much of why you feel good on ALA. And yes, NAC should also feel good. And so should garlic, cabbage, eggs, and other stuff I don't remember.... You might, at this point, want to read the whole section about sulfur and thiols: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Autism-Mercury/files/ANDY_INDEX It will include some more examples and may have a list of foods (I haven't read it in some time). There is also a list of sulfur foods in Andy's book (in one of the appendixes). best wishes, Moria p.s. I don't know the first thing about sulfur metabolism. I am merely repeating Andy's ideas AS I UNDERSTAND THEM. Your mileage may vary.
Guest guest
Moria, I studied the info from Great Smokies, which I don't fully understand, but under " Depressed plasma sulfate " it says: " Suggests sulfoxidation impairment, especially when plasma cysteine is elevated. Organic sulfate precursors such as L-cysteine, N-acetyl cysteine, or glutathione may be contraindicated in thise cases. " My plasma cysteine is below the ref. range, but on plasma sulfate the ref. range is 4.80 to 5.30 and my number is 3.47. So I'm not trying to ask you a question and then contradict you. I'm just looking for answers from all possible sources. Maybe the NAC is okay if the plasma cysteine ISN'T elevated. I WAS feeling good on ALA. That is, my chronic headaches had improved and I was hoping to ease off the pain meds. I've had body aches, which could be from the ALA (knees and ankles), but this is easier to tolerate than headaches. Now it seems as though the ALA is causing my head to hurt where the metal plate is. I don't know if it is because I need to take a break or whether the mercury is releasing and showing itself this way, or if I'm getting a reaction to the plate itself. Anyway, I've discontinued the ALA for now and will give it a rest for awhile. I also read at Great Smokies that headaches can be caused by an amino acid imbalance. Taurine and seratonin are high in individuals during migraines. I'm making arrangements with my doctor to test my amino acids. Meanwhile, between chelation rounds, I need to support my liver. Thanks for the help. Marsha
