That's great, . I was very impressed with the amount of fiber you're

eating. I'm trying to eat a lot of fiber too. How are your blood sugars doing?

May God bless you. Lota

It is a very strange thing but I saw

the recommendation to eat 30g of fiber

a day. So I decided to work out how

much I was getting first and then

correct it by changing some low-fiber

foods in my diet.

The first time I did it I found that

I was already getting the 30g of

fiber from eating the recommended way

(mainly fruit and vegetables and some

grains and milk products and just a

little meat and fish and olive oil.)

This leads me to the suspicion that

nobody knows how much fiber we need.

All that they did was the same as I

did - work out how much we were going

to get anyway if we ate the way they

recommended and that was it: 30g!

It would have been silly if by eating

the way they recommended, we would not

get the amount of fiber they recom-

mended, wouldn't it?

From this and other experiences, I

have been led to the inevitable con-

clusion that this whole nutrition busi-

ness is not much more than witchcraft -

they bend the little science there is

on the subject to match what the

healthiest people they can find are

already eating.

Not a bad idea if you are dealing with

people in large numbers but no

guarantee that it will be just right

for individuals.

There might be some truth in the notion

that if you try to find out where the

USDA got its figures for the ideal

protein/fat/carbohydrate ratio (15%/30%/

55%) you get the story that by adding

up all the available food supply in the

world in millions of tons and working

out how much protein, how much fat and

how much carbohydrate there is in total

out there for everybody, it comes out

at 15e% protein, 30e% fat and 55e%

carbohydrate (e=in terms of energy).

If they had come up with any other

recommendation for individuals it would

have meant a tremendous shift in the

entire world food economy so 15/30/55

it had to be.

Then if you look at the microbiology of

it, there is a story that if you measure

the requirements of individual cells in

the human body and work out the average

requirement for all the billions of

cells in an average human body you come

up with - you guessed it! 15e% protein,

30e% fat and 55% carbohydrate!

There is power in the numbers!

Unfortunately, I have not been able to

get my protein down to 15e% nor my car-

bohydrate up to 55e% on a long-term

basis and my own physician has told me

that it is extremely difficult to do.

I have tried asking nutritionists to

test me and tell me what proportion

I need personally and they reply that

it cannot be done that way.

> How are your blood sugars doing?

I have had HbA1c of 5.4% for years now

on 500mg metformin HCL/day, thank you

for asking, Lota. For a time, when I

had my weight down to around 78kg

(172 lbs), I had HbA1c of 4.5% but the

hypo risk was too great and I reduced

my medication to 250mg/day to get back

up to 5.4%. Since then I put on weight

again to over 90 kg (198 lbs) and went

back to 500mg/day. Now I am losing

weight again since May 22nd and expect

that my HbA1c will do the same as

before.

Life has its ups and downs!

Regards
