Lynn,

I find rice noodles at the health food store and also www.missrobens.com has

a bunch of flours and noodles made from non-gluten grains or seeds/other

plants. Personally, I find it hard to cook them just right, so the noodles

don't " mushify " , but the Food Allergy Survivors Together website has tips on

cooking them. I'll find the link if you'd like. So far I " ve only tried 3

brands, I didn't like the Lundberg Family Farms rotini at all (too mushy), I

love Tinkyada spaghetti style noodles, and EnerG's macaroni rice pasta is

good too. I have yet to try the DeBoles penne or Good Life rice elbows, but

I'll let you know how they go when I do!

Kelsey

Hi Lynn - I'm Beth - an adult with EG, but i also have the problem with

vomiting, more than stomach pain with EG - so i understand what your son is

going through...I'm down to only eating potatoes right now, though i just

started prednisone again yesterday, so expect things to be a bit more " normal "

in a few days...

When i used to be able to eat rice, i loved rice noodles - they're great and

taste like regular noodles...you can usually find them in any health

food/natural food store...they also usually have rice crackers and rice chips

that are OK too...

I hope you can find some stuff for your son to eat...

Beth

Lynn -

I noticed that you are in Gaithersburg, I am in Reston. I have seen

rice noodles at Giant - I think they are in the Asian food section. I

don't know about Safeway, I rarely go there.

I'm sure you could also find them in Fresh Fields.

Greetings! I am new to this support group. I have a 12 year old son,

Shane, who was diagnosed with EG a little over 1.5 years ago. He has been

sick for over 2 years -- it took almost 6 months to diagnose him and he

wasted away to almost nothing in the interim -- like a walking skeleton.

He was anorexic by the time he was finally diagnosed and would never eat.

Just getting fluids down him and to eat a piece of toast was a major

effort. I really believe he has always had this problem since his stomach

has always hurt him and he has alway vomited easily, his entire life. But

he became extremely ill a little over two years ago. Since he was

diagnosed, he has been placed on steriods three times -- he is currently on

them -- for a total of over 10 months in 26 months. I didn't know there

was a support group on the Web until I read the article in the Washington

Post on the Harlow family and contacted . Thank you, ,

for pointing me to this Web site.

Shane is currently being treated by two doctors at Hopkins Hospital,

Dr. Wood, a pediatric allergist, and Dr. Oliva-Hempker, a

pediatric gastro. I take Shane back to Hopkins Hospital the end of

this month to see both doctors. I will be taking the article on the Harlow

family to discuss it with the doctors. They have already talked about

feeding Shane the formula through a tube, but we haven't resorted to it

yet. But I am very uncomfortable with him being on steriods for so long.

Nothing else has worked, though, to stop his vomiting. When the symptoms

flare up, ice chips won't even stay down, and this lasts for weeks and

weeks and weeks without the steroids. The doctors tell me that Shane

vomits with this disease more than most kids. They say most kids have more

pain than vomiting. Anybody, has this been your experience?

Anyway, where does one find rice noodles? In health food stores? Shane

currently has five proteins eliminated from his diet -- milk, wheat, soy,

eggs, and nuts. It's hard to find things he can eat that he likes, and he

misses noodles.

Thanks for any help you can give me. I've felt very alone in all this for

the past two years and am delighted to find a support group.

Lynn

Thanks for replying, Beth. Shane has tried the rice crackers and one type

of rice bread. He doesn't like either and won't eat them. But I didn't

know there was rice noodles, rice chips, or rice pudding. I'll look for it

the next time I'm at the health food store. Maybe Shane can learn to

acquire a taste for some of these things.

I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks again,

Lynn
