Guest guest
Personally, I don't think all carbohydrates are created equal. Have you ever heard the phrase " glycemic index? " Some foods, like sugar and refined white flour, have high glycemic indexes. That means that our bodies can digest them very quickly, and they make our insulin levels fluctuate. Many people (me included) believe that insulin fluctuation makes it very hard to eat a good diet, and leads to cravings and compulsive eating. Other foods, like plums, for example, have low glycemic indexes. Your insulin spikes when you eat a plum, but it takes a good long time for the insulin to break-down the plum and digest it. Low glycemic-index foods may be better choices for people who are diabetic or just sensitive to carbohydrates. " Diets " like The Zone and the Carbohydrate Addict's Diet (hate the name, like the science behind it) teach us that moderate amounts of high-glycemic foods are OK, but they should be combined with sources of fat and protein, too. I'm using the Carbohydrate Addict's Diet and swimming to get back on track, and it's working for me. I am following this plan, but have an " escape hatch " planned. First of all, I'm going to modify it and add unrefined carbohydrates to my diet (in moderation) once I've lost the weight I gained in the last few months. Also, I have decided that if I ever feel like I'm in " food jail " I'll take a day or two off of it, but will write down what I ate so I'll be aware of my eating. For me, this works. I think many of the people on this list have " food issues " and we need to figure out a strategy for eating that won't let us gain back most of our weight. The people on this list I find the most fascinating are the ones who modify a diet plan or come up with their own diet plans and make them work. BTW, I've found glycemic indexes on the web, but if someone can find an especially easy to follow one, I'd love the link. P.S., I think glycolic indexes and glycemic indexes are used interchangeably. I think glycolic was the old term and glycemic is the new term.

Guest guest
MIchelle, Please explain the new labeling requirement via carbs. Are you talking ineffective/effective or what? I don't get it! I AM SO CONFUSED! I read somewhere that carbs and protein count for 4 calories per gram (20 grams protein equals 80 calories then) while fats count for 9 but someone on another list posted a label for a bar and their calorie count was no where near what it should have been going by what i just said. What are the new labeling requirements? please share! Rasley mailto:drasley@... Guest guest
Even the sugar free sweeteners are now counted as carbs, the non-impact carbs are now lumped together with the other carbs, good, bad, ugly, harmless. For example, the Diet Dr bar became CArbRite, and the carbs went from 0g to 20g without changing a single thing in the bar. Guest guest
Could you please provide a list (or rather lists) of these carbs -- good, bad, ugly and harmless. Which is which? And yes this is a serious question. I thought a carb was a carb with the only differential being whether they were complex or simple. Rasley mailto:drasley@... Guest guest
Yes, to me, too. But my filing system is much simpler. Will it make me fat again? yes/no. Sugar will I suspect too much white bread or white rice or boxed foods will (but I don't eat much) good grains are very filling, so they're safe nuts seeds complex carbs are partially left behind at the duodenum there, so even if they WERE bad, they are at least partly lost there. But we need the vites in the complex carbs, as we usually do not supplement them. And since we do get part of it, it IS in the foods. As long as we don't avoid those foods. Guest guest
When our bodies digest a whole grain product, it takes a longer time to digest than something like a slice of Wonder Bread. I refuse to vilify any food, and if I really wanted a slice of Wonder Bread I'd figure out a way to eat it. When I started to examine the number of heavily refined carbohydrates in my diet, I realized that I didn't really like them that much. I was eating a bagel because it was there, not because it was what I really wanted. I picture all carbohydrates on a continuum. That continuum is based on lots of things: What's the glycemic index of the food in question? Does it contain nutrients I really need, or has all of the actual nutrition been stripped out and then enriched? Will it help my bowel/intestinal health, or make me constipated? Does it contain cancer-preventing phytochemicals, found in fruits and vegetables? Right now, I eat one serving of carbohydrates a day. I'll stick to that until I lose 13 more pounds. (Long story - it's what I gained.) Anyway, that one serving could be a small slice of pie, if that's what I wanted. Instead, I seem to be eating peaches right now. Anyway, I have managed to make no food illegal. I can eat anything I want, as long as it's part of a meal and fits with my food plan. On the other end of things, I don't embrace all non-carbohydrate foods. I dare not touch on any dairy related issues (I'd sooner take a trip to the West Bank and express my opinions on Middle-Eastern conflicts and Zionism), but there are some very calorie dense foods that are allowed on low-carb diets. I choose to eat things like full-fat cheeses, cream, olives, butter, nuts, and seeds in moderation. I know that I am very smart, and can outsmart almost any diet on a technicality! Of course, if I had high cholesterol, I would eat more nuts, seeds, and olives and fewer animal-fat containing products. Luckily, I have low cholesterol. I will have my cholesterol checked next time I go to my doctor, to make sure that this way of eating isn't damaging my body. I've seen heart disease, and I don't want it. Unfortunately, diabetics have lots of heart attacks. Diabetes runs in my family, and is linked to obesity, so I'm hoping that I can avoid heart disease by avoiding diabetes. I'll be very curious to hear how anyone else fits knowledge about glycemic indexes into daily life. There are days when I look back on my pre-bypass days fondly, when I was blissfully ignorant! Someone asked me what I ate in a typical 3 day period. That's too ambitious, but here is what I'd eat in one day: Breakfast 2 egg omelet: a little cheese and a little butter mushrooms green pepper Lunch: Greek salad at St. Louis Bread Company, with no bread (be careful - some salad dressings have lots of sugar in them) Snack: pork rinds (Yeah, I feel like white trash when I buy them. That's part of the fun!) Dinner (I have to eat it in one hour, so the carbohydrates won't mess-up my insulin level): A salad with bleu cheese dressing (again, it's low in sugar) and no carrots or croutons A small steak A baked potato Steamed non-starchy vegetables Snack: Leftover eggplant parmesan with a little tomato sauce and melted parmesan cheese If you'll notice, I don't drink much milk. I really don't enjoy it. I am religious about taking Calcium Citrate! I also drink a ton of diet soda, which probably stimulates my insulin levels, but I can't give it up. I've been trying to eat whole, basic foods, and avoid highly processed foods. I found out that MSG is in lots of processed foods, like lunchmeat and cheese. Guess what they feed lab animals to get them to gain weight? MSG! in St. Louis in St. Louis In a message dated 7/31/02 3:10:56 PM Central Daylight Time, vitalady@... writes: > > Yes, to me, too. Guest guest
hi billijo! i'm not a bleeder either. warming the area to be poked does help - warm water, rubbing the area. a little foam ball to squeeze might help too. i've switched to the Therasense Flash meter because i don't bleed. it uses only a 3/10 microliter drop of blood. it's about $80, but with all the rebates it's much less. they also have a less expensive, slightly larger version, called the Freestyle. sometimes they have deals for the Freestyle where it works out for free. wanted to ask: is that 30 carbs, 3 x a day supposed to be the plan forever? are you type 2, taking any diabetes medications? i'm type 1 and i don't know all that i could know about type 2...though where i go they tried to educate on us that as well. but in any case, that sounds pretty low to me. they say the brain needs a minimum 120 carbs a day to function properly...did i miss understand the regimen? ok. just checking! cheers! rach > I am very new at this and at the mercy of my diabetes educator. She has me on 30 carbs 3 times a day plus of course a total 30 grams a day with 15 grams soluble and the protein I forgot lol well a small deck of cards size piece works for me. Actually I do eat soy products more than meat! Ok goofed today cause I was dizzy in the morn, didn't get a reading. I ate the recommended breakfast and lunch but did have coffee with sugar this afternoon. Before supper I was 114 2 hours after I was 179. > Since I don't know what all this means there it is lol. > > Another small problem since I am so new. I stuck my self like the instructions told me with the spring loaded sticker. Couldn't get enough blood. Did it right where I was told. Turned the sticker to the deepest setting stuck myself again on the side of a different finger near the nail, pressing hard with the sicker against my finger. Still not enough. Took the lanclet out and stick it manually giving it a twist and sticking it in all the way. > Guess what I need to say is I have extensive nerve and blood flow problems in my hands. I'm lucky don't have to say ouch cause I don't feel it. Second attempt to day I soaked my hands in warm water and this seems to be the solution unless someone has another idea. Actually I am new to the testing today is the first day.I did buy the wonderful book by Gretchen Becker! > billijo > wolfgrrrl productions > fine art photography and graphics > 1117 clinton ave south rochester new york 14620 > > >
Guest guest
wanted to ask: is that 30 carbs, 3 x a day supposed to be the plan forever? Since this was my first visit to the educator it is a starting plan. The goal for me is to eat 6 small meals. I think she is trying to get me to adapt a plan first without triggering my anorexia. Because of long term anorexia eating is very hard!!! Food does not look like a friend first thing in the morn. I hope the carbs can go up a bit as I spread them out through the day. Hay, I have a good start....I'm sticking to it everyday!!! are you type 2, taking any diabetes medications? Yes I am type II in the very beginning of treatment. No meds yet!!! billijo
Guest guest
thanks, billijo, for the explanation i can see that now as a starting plan and with no meds, which may or may not be needed. that's pretty much what i did myself at the beginning, when they couldn't tell if i was type 1 or type 2. have to say, i never used to really be a breakfast eater either, but have come to need my breakfast. i'm trying to do 3 meals and 1-2 snacks now that i take insulin, but i used to do mini meals. always had a tendency towards hypoglycemia, and i really just loved *mini meal-ing.* oh yes - good for you for such a good start! that's really great. and that's so great you have a nutritionist right off the bat. rach > > > wanted to ask: is that 30 carbs, 3 x a day supposed to be the plan > forever? > Since this was my first visit to the educator it is a starting plan.
