Hey Patsy,

Yes, I am finding out that there a lot of nice people here. I am been

sitting here for a while now, just answering the post from you guys.

I have never had this much support before in my life. This is so

wonderful. Somebody else talked about a diabetic book for dummies. I

am going to see if I can find it. Thanks so much

Hi again !

Hope you are having a better time now :)

Diabetes can be passed down genetically, as my family has learned

over the years.

I was the first diagnosed in 1976, then my sister was diagnosed in

1987, then my brother was diagnosed in 1996, my daughter in 1998,

and my father in 2000 (he is type 2)

I was always very hyper vigilant with my kids, anytime they would

be sick i test their boold sugars, just to be sure. Either with

throwing up, or even my son when he has episodes of extreme anger, i

test his blood sugar.

My daughter started showing symptoms about a year before she was

diagnosed, i noticed that she was always very thirsty, we did not

experience any kind of weight loss, and she was also urinating alot,

which i thought may be because of how much she was drinking.

She was dx'd 2 days after thanksgiving, i gave her a regular orange

soda to drink, and about a half hour she began throwing up alot, and

my first first thought was oh my god her blood's high, and the

second thought was BUT SHE DOESN'T HAVE DIABETES

but trusting my first instinct, i put her in the bath, and said, ok

humor mommy, we're gonna check your sugar, and i checked her and the

meter read only " HIGH " , which meant in excess of 600, i cried, i

knew what that meant, and had a minor breakdown in the livingroom,

thinking of what her life would be like, and the struggles that lay

ahead, and her little voice song like from the bathroom, she

said " mommy, does that mean i can go to your camp now? " just four

months before, i had taken her to the clara barton camps alumni day

where i was a camper for 7 years, and she loved it, and wanted to go

there just like i had. But i had explained to her that it was just

for girls who had diabetes.

and i thought if she's not upset, why am i?? so off we went to the

hospital, and she came home that night, and we went to boston

childrens hospital the next day, for the work ups. i caught it so

early, that she never got sick, most kids get very sick with DKA,

but we were lucky.

and now, she goes to clara barton camp every summer, and has for the

last 5 years, and loves it.

we don't look at diabetes as being a bad/sad thing, we try to stay

positive, and even celebrate our anniversaries with sugar free cake.

take care!

how are you? omg, i also went to camp nyda when I was younger, back

in 1980. i think i was there for like three summers. I remember a

man named Russ, who i always said was my camp dad, he played the

guitar and a girl named Amy Passy.

how funny.

yup, everyday is a struggle here, Ariana is having a hard time with

getting control of those darn sugars, we make progress, and then she

grows some more, and more adjustments get made in the meal plan, and

the insulin doses, and just when we get things working, it's back to

the drawing board. We are hoping to have her on the pump BEFORE

puberty hits. I had such a hard time with that, I would be in the

ICU every month for about 3 years, I am scared to death of having to

go through it with my daughter.

I think that things are different now, and there is so much more

known, that there should be little problems with the health care

team.

Back then, my endo said that my cycle and diabetes had nothing to do

with eachother, which we know is very untrue.

I actually had made charts for her, showing the pattern over several

months, the drop in the sugars, then the start of the cycle, and

then the spike and rapid onset of dka, losing 10-15 pounds at a

time, weighing at 47 pounds when i was 13 didn't really have the

weight to lose, my dad would have to carry me into the ER.

usually after a 2 week stay, i was back to normal, and getting ready

for the next one.

what a scary thing, not sure how my mom did it all those years.

We have only had one time when Ariana had to go to the hospital,

with an ear infection, and she only had to stay overnight for an

insulin drip, and antibiotics through the iv. I thought i was gonna

break down then. lol

Can't imagine having to go through it over and over.

I hope you are feeling well! Look forward to hearing from you

again! Take care!

WHOA! I was at Camp NYDA the summer of 1980! Wouldn't it be weird

if we 'knew' each other then? I also went back in, I think, 1982 &

83 (or '83 & '84 when I became a CIT). I don't remember the names of

too many people from back then. But I became good friends with a kid

named Mark who came from Bermuda, with whom I kept in contact for

many years until he passed away. In fact, it was his kidney failure

that made me decide to go on the pump and take greater control of my

diabetes, though he was particularly noncompliant. But I digress...

P.S. To the person who asked about TVP being 'good' for diabetics.

They are good healthy products, but I don't really know what 'good

for diabetics' means because all diabetics have to balance their

eating and regimen regardless of what they eat. But they are low in

fat and carbohydrates, high in protein. They are a wonderful

invention to replace meat for vegetarians and those who need to eat

lower fat.

-Hi !

I was in the first cabins, 1,2 and 3 i think. i was about 6 my first

year there.

The names escape me now as well, but just the two i mentioned

before, and also ray espada, but called him stingray.

I actually still have a t shirt with everyone's signature, and

another that is blank, that my daughter wears to bed. lol

we may know eachother, wouldn't that be funny? I can't remember

which month i went, I should check with my dad, he'd probably

remember.then i went to clara barton camp when we moved to

Massachusetts, and met a girl there who also went to nyda. What a

small world!

Take care! Look forward to hearing from you again soon!
