Guest guest
luv, I went through the same thing when I was diagnosed as a diabetic in 1999. You do learn to live with it and decide that it (Diabetes) will not rule your life. Taking your blood sugars and taking your meds becomes second nature. Other people posting here have pretty much said the same thing. Hi , Don't worry, you've discovered it in plenty of time to ward off all those horror stories you've heard. As everyone has been telling you, it's not a fast-acting disease, and it's highly managable. I've had it for 4 years, and the only thing I've really changed is to eat the way I already knew I should and get more exercise. Join a Mommy & Me play group and you'll get plenty of exercise. 8-] They've made so many strides in diabetes management since your grandmother's time...or mine too, for that matter. Or even my father's time. It is so empowering to take charge of your own condition, as you'll see. And all the scary parts will fade in no time. The first few times I took my blood glucose, I was shaking, but now it's like brushing my teeth -- just routine. And best of all, you will be starting your family off right with a proper balanced diet they can live with and be healthy. Think of it as a challenge, not a defeat. You have all the wonderfully helpful people on this site to guide you. And the internet is overflowing with information. You won't be in the dark for long! Hang in there, . Help is on the way. Guest guest
Wow, . I don't blame you for being hyper-vigilent with your daughter. You are very lucky to have caught it so soon. I was diagnosed when I was 9 years old. I had all the classic symptoms--frequent urination, massive weight loss, bloated belly, sleeping a lot, always hungry and thirsty, etc. I went to my grandmother's for the Christmas holiday and she took one look at me and knew I was very sick. After trying to 'fatten me up' for a week with pancakes and malteds and stuff like that, she was alarmed that I had slept all night and then slept several hours during the day. She immediately took me to the doctor, and I was flown back home to my parents and placed in ICU. I weighted 42 lbs, was in ketoacidosis (obviously) and my blood sugars were 2000. Yesssss, 2000. The pediatrician said he was amazed I wasn't in a coma or dead already. I was very fortunate to have an incredible team of doctors pull me back from the edge and provide the education and support I and my family needed. To this day I will never forget the little EDI cartoon (exercise-diet-insulin) and practicing to inject on oranges and my Raggedy Ann doll. I too went to a diabetic sleepaway camp (Camp NYDA) and it was the best thing for me. Kids see quickly how they are not alone and can manage their diabetes, and that it doesn't have to completely rule your life. Phew, it's been awhile since I've told that story. I guess hearing your story w/your daughter inspired me! :-) I am now 35 and on an insulin pump. And as everyone on the list now knows...am struggling with my weight. But thankfully, no complications like poor circulation, neuropathy, etc. Knock wood. __________________________________________________
