When you go to a job interview and someone tells you " O, but you are so well educated...! " or " but you speak so well... " or they assume that you got where you are simply because of affirmative action, it's really hard to lighten up and not become sensitive to bigotry of any kind. When you have to wonder if somewhere inside them they really mean it, then it's hard to hear the jokes. I have a sense of humour too, and sometimes I think the jokes are really funny- but when I hear them, I usually wonder if the person telling it isn't the tiniest bit convinced that Polish people really are stupid, or that most Black people (of course, " present company excluded, " which I've heard before from the most well-meaning of people) aren't criminals and/or on welfare. The cannibal joke (which I don't remember reading) wasn't the point of what I said as much as the necessity for sensitivity in a society where people can be really mean. So while it occurs for you as people being too sensitive, to me, it occurs as a courtesy, or an extra step to make sure that no one feels disenfranchised. And yet I hear so many " white " jokes from black entertainers right there on TV, and yet no white person can say anything about another race without being tossed out of society. People read into things when they are not there, and people that do great things don't get recognized anymore because it might 'hurt' someone else's feelings. It's a crazy mixed up world and I still say lighten up, people. I think if you are on this list to begin with, you have experienced some form of discrimination: and if someone's discrimination is less painful than someone else's....well, that's another can (maybe a rusk can?) all together. And I would consider you a very rare person if you'd never laughed at an ethnic joke, a lawyer joke, or a joke at anyone's expense...face it: all humor is at someone's expense. I don't know about you, but I tend to think of this list as a family: maybe a disfunctional one...but a family never the less. I don't (or didn't until recently) censor my every thought and word because someone who didn't know me might think me a racist, a bigot, stupid, or just plain mean: none of the above is true. (and FOR THE RECORD, i object to a past post that asserts that all of us are bigots...i just don't think that's true either). I would hope that my family, even a virtual extended one, would know enough about me from my history here to know that what I say, (or for that matter what any one says) is not ever meant to be hurtful, sniping, or unkind. And the same for the other people on this list, who are all trying so hard to lose weight and stay on a lo carb path... We are all faced with discrimination every day. Sorry to bring it up, but tall, thin, blond people have discrimination of a different type than short people, ugly people, Black people, Native American people, Italian Americans....on and on and on......we all labor under the delusions that other people have about us...other people who suffer from delusionary thoughs of their own. And we all have to lighten up.....
