To be honest I would find another endo, and treat the diabetes first. It may

be the root cause, or at least aggrivating your other problems.

Hi,

I am new member and i was wondering what should i do about my blood

sugars always being high? My endocrinologist that i used to have

told me that diabetes is the last thing i should treat because not

only do i have diabetes but i have a mental illness, sleep apnea,

acid reflux, arthritis, borderline high cholesterol and that is

about it. What type of diet would you recommend or do you agree

with the endocrinologist that i had? My blood sugar numbers are

usually in the 300-400 range, although sometimes it gets as high as

500-600. I was diagnosed with diabetes 4 years ago and it has never

been under control. I take 50 units of regular insulin twice a day

and 100 units of lantus at bedtime. Any suggestions would be

greatly appreciated.

thanks,

I have an anxiety disorder. I have high anxiety and get panic attacks. I find

when my sugars are high Im much worse. So treating the diabetes also treats my

anxiety and keeps me much calmer. fran

I second that M.E. , all the research that I have done said that diabetes

can be either the cause or at very least the aggravate of depression, and

lots of other things...

Go to another endocrinologist. Diabetes is not one of the last

things to treat. It can take your life. That should be treated

first. The mental illness can be treated last, if need be. The high

cholesterol (or borderline in your case), can be taken care of with a

change of diet. I did the Atkins diet, only to help with the nausea

that I have been feeling, and that has lowered my cholesterol. I

dropped from 256 to 216. But do have your diabetes treated.

What tends to amaze me, is how Drs. anymore are so uneducated when it comes to

being Diabetic... Why do they tend not to worry when a persons Blood Sugar is so

high? I wish sometimes even with weighing under 200 pds... I am 5' 9 1/2 " and

weigh around 180-185.

What tips can we do on our own until we find a Doctor who can help find the

right solutions for our lives Blood Sugar wise?

I have a girlfriend who got a meter because she was always hypo all her life.

Well in the last year her sugars have been high. Like today it stayed up close

to 200 all day. She keeps showing the doctors and they keep telling her its due

to because she has seasures sometimes. Im thinking maybe its her sugars causing

them. I talked her into seeing another doctor the 18th because her doctors wont

listen that her sugars are high and do anything. They just put her on seasure

meds and pushed her out the door. The meds have her all screwed up. She slurs

her speech on them, cant walk strait, and they keep uping the dose. Some doctors

just have no brains. fran

Tina,

Drs. have practically no education in nutrition. That is the first part.

The second part is that the " information " that had always been accepted as

the truth about nutrition and diabetes was flawed. Some diabetic educators and

docs still insist on the old thinking and that terrible food pyramid that we

were all taught in school.

I must be older than you, because when I was in school we were taught

the " Four Food Groups. "

I do agree about medical doctors not knowing about nutrition; it is not

a required course in medical school, and is not always even offered as

an elective. Chiropractors are required to take nutrition, oddly

enough. (I'm not sure about osteopaths.)

I know just what you are talking about. My granson william is 7 1/2 at 5 1/2 he

had his first seizure. The hospital didnt listen to the ambulance who told them

his blood suagr was 400. They said oh he must be eleptic. THey did an MRI and a

Cat and coudnt find anything they did an eeg that they said showed spike waves

in his sleep the problem he didnt go to sleep and kept ripping off the leads.

They gave him Valporic acid geniric for depacote depakene. It messed him up bad

took him off that a few months later a new seizure a blood eading of over 600

did they do anything yea they changed his med to lamictal not a lot of side

effects but over 400.00 a month. after a year of battleing with a with a nero

that just wanted to keep adding meds to the lamictal like amitriptyline wich

almost killed him the nero said kids dont get diabetis or hypoglacimia I finally

said your fired. I then went and researched neros I found one that would listen

to both william and I.THe first thing the new

nero said was why wasnt his blood sugars ever followed up on?

She is the one who said she believed william is hypo with rebounding sugars.

Guess what after a diet change and monitering of his sugars he is hypo and he

hasnt had a seizure in almost 1 year Your friend needs a new nero one who will

listen and she should see a good endo. It might be she just has seizures and it

could be she is hypo or maybe diabetic.

There are a lot of info on seizures and diabetis and hypoglacimia. I have spent

so many hours and days reasearching its truly amazing what you find out.

As for the elpetic med have you reasearched it they are all horrid in different

ways if william started having seizures again I dont think I would do anothere

seizure med. It was more harm for him then good. It is taking over 6 months to

get him off the seizure med he is on now. luckily it wasnt as bad for him as the

others were.

Most neros treat the seizures and not the person there answere is to only add

more med tothe existing ones. Tell your friend to try to get her just before she

has her seizure if she has an aura or as soon as they can after it starts.

bloodsugar went to 29.

If he looks odd pale or just not him we take it .

I hope your friend searches and gets some real answeres tell her to go with her

gut feeling.

Hello All!!

I gotta say this. I have read all of the posts to this particular

topic. I have to say that I have gained a great deal of education

about doctors when you say you have or have not any insurance. I

dont have insurance right now. I have been on both sides of that

fence and either way they dont listen. These doctors work for you.

If one is not treating your diabetes, it is best to find another,

ESPECIALLY if you do have insurance. Last time I had insurance, the

doctor was treating me for things I didnt have. When i asked for a

copy of all my records he wanted to know why. AND I TOLD HIM. I told

him that I had found a doctor that is listening to what i have to say

AND not hearing CHA-CHING everytime i walked in the door and not

listeing to what i had to say. When I found the doctor that i have

now he is the one that diagnosed me with diabetes. Im happy to have

him as my doctor and when he retires i will be one sad person.

, you cant let you blood sugars get that high. You are hurting

yourself. Like everyone else has said.. treat the diabetes and it

will help with everything else.

thanks.. and sorry for the rant!!
