Guest guest Posted April 10, 2000 Report Share Posted April 10, 2000 Hi, For those of you who have a child on chronic steroid use.......Do you home school? If not, does the child end up sick a lot because of the low immune system? Do you limit their time with other children. The reason I ask is because I would just love to put Spencer in a couple hours a day preschool. He loves the interaction with other kids and often asks me if he can go play with his friends. I really don't want to keep him in the house all of the time away from other kids but at the same time I don't want to constantly be putting him in situations that will land him in the hospital. Guest guest Posted April 10, 2000 Report Share Posted April 10, 2000 My son is on Prelone....same as Prednisone and Prednisolone. He is on very large amounts of it. His doctor said that to him his face looks pretty puffy, but I can't tell he has been on it for so long. The limbs of his body are so skinny that in my opinion his face looks normal and his legs and arms don't. His belly is swollen though. He doesn't look like a pre-transplant child though. He just started going to preschool and hasn't been having too bad of a problem. 2 colds since he started 2 months ago but none turned out to be horrible. We homeschooled for the past two months because the teacher was being emotionally abusive to him. We got him switched to a new classroom and he started back today. I don't know how much he will be in school, but he doesn't interact much with other kids anyway. I was just referring to other kids on steroids for transplant have to take like 150% more steroids than anyone else. They look very puffy! When Remi started preschool, she caught everything that came down the pike. I was much sicker as a 1st year preschool teacher last year than this year. It is tough. Now everyone can be sick and Remi can fight it all off and I am getting better at it. As a teacher, I am on my kids about washing their hands constantly after blowing their noses and putting fingers to their mouths. Sorry, i couldn't be more encouraging. It is hard to prove and even harder to get the child moved to another classroom. I have been there and it was a real battle. The new teacher was absolutely amazed at what a nice child my son was because of what the other teacher had said about him. She actually enjoyed having him in her class and he just blossomed...
