Steph,

We have not been able to convince her GI dr. that we should switch

from Vivonex to Elecare to Neocate. Its interesting because Phyllis'

daughter, AJ, goes to the same group of GI drs. and she's on Neocate, but

they won't switch . The dr. said that because has been on it

for so long (3 1/2 years) and is doing OK, he sees no reason to switch her.

Our ped is supportative, but won't give the order to switch the formula

without GI approval. I haven't yet talked to the ped about this new

formula, but I don't want on it. We will be moving soon (within the

next month), so I imagine we can fight this battle with the new dr., if

need be.

Thanks so much for your note. The worse part about the questions is when

they come from health care professionals. The GI nurse thought I was being

horrible because I won't give food by mouth. EVERYTHING makes her

sick (either GI symptoms, asthma, hives,etc.) She cannot eat anything

anymore. She has started sneaking food lately, just so she can eat. She

always gets sick later, but she sneaks anyway. Does BJ do this? BTW,

's birthday is 9/27/95.

Hi Sherri,

I have never heard of Peptamin being used for EE/EG or EC. It has Whey and

stuff like that. They told me at Beaumont hospital that it was exactly the

same as Neocate and about flipped my lid. I questioned why I was buying the

$250 a case formula versus the $75 a case??? I called and they do not

suggest using it for any Eosinophil disease. Elecare is really great!!!

It's much cheaper than Neocate and Vivonex and is much better balanced (at

least more than Vivonex). It's also predigested so its easier to tolerate

(ha, ha NOT for Spencer).

Also, I just wanted to let you know that you are not the only one that

looses it. Mike, my husband, just asked me today if him being gone 5 days a

week would be too hard on me and I about flipped my lid.

I also hate when people ask me if Spencer will grow out of this. WE REALLY

DON'T KNOW!!! It makes me crazy too! I sure hope you start to feel

happier. Go rent a good movie or something this weekend!

expensive led us to trying it.

Dawn,

I'm glad to hear that isn't the only child who sneaks food. She ate

a peanut about a month ago and had a moderate reaction. It was the first

time she'd ever eaten a peanut in her life. She tested positive for peanut

at 9 months old, so we never gave her any. Of course, my dh was out of

town so I had to haul all four kids to the doc so she could check

out.

's weight hasn't changed much in 2 years. She always weighs between

30 and 33 lbs. She has a g-tube, so we can " make " her eat, even when she

doesn't want to.

None of those questions seemed trivial at all. I think those are questions

we all ask and wish there were answers for. I think that is one of the most

fustrating things about this disease is that there are few answers out there

and SO many questions. We are all entitled to feel fed up and tired every

so often and usually the next day or so is better. Hope things start

seeming brighter soon

gotten so frustrating. Some of her drs. and these people at Apria (her

Vivonex supplier) treat this whole situation lightly. They act like

changing her formula is a simple thing, like, do you want Coke or Pepsi?

on right now. I want to change her to something better, not worse.

I have emailed Novartis - they haven't responded. I'd love to get a

response in writing but have been unable to do so. If you know a way to

reach them, I'd like to know. I guess I'm going about it the wrong way.

Phyllis,

Did Neocate say ELECARE wasn't meant for allergic people? That is a

complete FALSEHOOD. I can sned you the links....

the formula was actually made FOR allergic disease. It was studied in a

group of EE/EG kids already on Neocate. They took half and switched them to

Elecare and had the same results (i.e. no eos in biopsies) and good

tolerance. It is also much cheaper.

The makers of Neocate have lost their niche in the market with Ross' Elecare

and I suspect they are scared. It is extremely disturbing they would out

and out lie about this, however, especially when the information is so

easily obtained.

I was allergic to both formulas, but I " ve never heard of anyone else being

allergic to either one.

Apria must be everywhere b/c when we lived in Utah that was our supply

The billing is wayyyy apart from their supply services. They got our

insurance to pay for over the counter formula. That was great.

We also got really good Ng tubes from them. They were a neonatal size and

would last a long time. That is if he would keep it in.

The ones they sent us ended at his ear, it drove him nuts, that would me

too! Plus you have to connect it to the pump and therefore it was very

irritating to his ear so we ended up going with this huge long tube that

went around his ear and half down his back and then we pinned it on his

shirt. On thing though, don't forget that it is pinned! I did that once,

took his shirt off and wam, out it came. I still feel guilt about that!!

AJ's appt is at 11:00 at AI. Any chance you can meet us there? I know you

have a really hectic schedule with moving and all. It would be great

though. We are going to a convention this summer in Philly for the Deaf and

Hard of Hearing. I am going just so AJ can see she is not alone and other

people have hearing aids. It can be such a comfort to know you aren't the

only one.

This is whay Clayton was switched to Elecare which he has been on now for

almost a year. He gets tube fed at night and drinks about 8 ounces of it by

mouth. However he has been on an elemental formula since he was 6 months of

age (Neocate) and been drinking it since then. However, he would not touch

the vivonex by mouth.
