Absolutely! but that's one of the reasons I am selective about whom I tell about my T1/diabetic status . . . *I* choose if/when/how much I will bend the " rules " and how I will compensate. Diabetes, in its various forms and ways of treating it, is difficult enough for us to learn to understand but normal folks really get confused and find it nearly impossible to understand as they tend to see it as black-and-white, all or nothing, always or never . . . and that can turn them (no matter how well-meaning) into the Food Police. Example1: Aunt Hester offers you a piece of cake (perhaps loaded with frosting) and you say, " No, I can't eat that, I'm diabetic. " (I would just say " no, thank you " .) Under different circumstances, a friend offers you a piece of to-die-for carrot cake and you decide you just *have* to have some so you do and take an extra shot to cover it . . . and Aunt Hester overhears and is insulted because you told *her* you were diabetic and COULDN'T eat *her* cake. (Aunt Hester probably doesn't have a clue about insulin .. . she only knows that you said you're diabetic and can't eat cake . . . yet now you're eating cake . . . ??!?) Example2: Only sweets are offered for dessert and you are, possibly, feeling a bit deprived . . . you tell them, " I can't eat any of that sweet stuff; I'm diabetic " (with kind of a pout, perhaps, because what you really mean is that you'd like them to provide some alternative that you *can* eat) . . . so those folks either feel guilty (cuz you can't eat a dessert) or go to some lengths to provide an alternative that you can eat or both . .. . then witness you eating that piece of carrot cake from Example 1.
