Actually when Caton had his upper GI at Children's Hosp. I was required

to be with him (not that I didn't want to, I did, but it was not an

option - I had to). When he had his lower GI I was supposed to stay

with him but couldn't since I was pregnant, instead DH had to go in and

Winnie and I watched from behind a protected area. It was interesting

to be with a 2.5yr old, watching her little brother's insides being

projected on a screen - oh the questions!

I consider that one of our big science activities in the homeschool curriculum!

Yes, I realize that, that's why I figured I probably would not be able

I know what you mean about peaceful being unusual! Caton's had a fever

the last several days and he's been quite a bit calmer than usual. Not

that I like my kid being sick, but it is awfully nice to have him so

peaceful and calm for a change.

Yes, you are probably right. I would like to hold him as he's going

under, though. I think I've heard that they let you do that, we'll see.

I don't think they let you stay at all anywhere. I am not sure I would want

to but I can see what you mean, one part wanting to be with your child. I

stayed in the room one time when they did a spinal tap on BJ and since then

I have pretty well learned that I am better off out of the room except with

small stuff like IVs and such.

LOL! Dakota(my 7 yo) actually finds these very interesting. She has been

with me a few times when they did upper and lower GIs. I have always gone

in with him with the GI test except the scopes.

There is a HUGE difference in an upper GI and an EGD or colonoscopy. One is

a radiologic procedure, very minor, and the other is considered " surgical "

even though it is low risk, not actually cutting, etc...

I was at Walter when I was present with Kody.. he was having an EGD

with G-J tube replacement under flouro. I was talking to him as he was

going under, then he was so peaceful (this was very unusual for Kody), his

GI called over the radiologist and the techs, and just started the

procedure. A few minutes into it he said, " Oh, ya, I guess you've never

seen this before " ... it had just occurred to him that I was still in the

room when he had the scope INSIDE Kody's gut.

One of my first jobs in college was in a surgeon's office and I assisted

many a time in his in-office procedures. I've seen blood, guts, cutting,

etc.... but this was MY kid and it was disturbing. you dont want to see

your kid undergoing any kind of procedure that requires sedation. You won't

be given the option anyway, but you don't want that option either.

Here we can stay with the child while they put them under and after they are

out they send you out of the room.
