Guest guest
I get so confused by these half-informed questions...I know a lot of people here are new diabetics, so here goes. I am learning the GI diet, so I will have some changes soon to also report on....BUT, I eat three meals per day ( versus my pre-dx one meal at 10 pm daily). I do not regularly snack---I may have a couple snacks per month. I am real good at taking my pre-meal Bg. I am lousy at my 2hour post meal Bg...Also, keep good records of your meals and each meal carb totals so you can train yourself carb intake...my meals are 9am--2pm--7pm on the average....my carb plan is 4-5, 4-5, and 5-6 (1 carb= 15 gr)....I need to lower these numbers to lose weight....I am an insulin dependant T2 with standard pill meds and I adjust my insulin or food according to my meals/Bg's---Dx'd about 7 years ago---now 56 yo----Have classic severe Metabolic Syndrome---Have had colon cancer, and a Cardiac Arrest, so you can see my mid-life diet was attrocious.....I DO NOT OBSESS about my disease or my eating....My diabetes is under control and as I continue to exercise and lose weight, I continue to lower my Insulin dosages. My suggestion....Get a book on carbohydrates or the Glycemic Index. Listen to your Endocrinologist or your diabetes Educator and/or Dietician.....and my best advice is if you can afford it, or have insurance, see a Lipids manager at the Cardiology Department of your clinic/hospital for a full lipids scan......They will tell you everything you ever desired to know about cholesterol and carbohydrates. Just remember that you are solely responsible for your meal plan....rarely are there two alike...I can eat pasta, carrots, and rice and they do not have much effect on my Bg's,,,,,But I am sure they may raise havoc with my fats..... [alldiabeticinternational] Re: Porkettes hi guys! ok, first things first: don't go! the discussion of all this is very educational! i wanted to ask a couple of things. first, how low is low carb? my med. team was pretty emphatic about eating a pretty normal diet for overall health, and esp. cardio-vascular health, since diabetics are at greater risk for these problems. of course, they may get kickbacks, but yes, i think they'd rather people take meds than have too restricted a diet. so my first question is...how did y'all weigh pros and cons of meds or no meds? the other thing, and i've been wondering about this, my doctor wants me to only make corrections at mealtimes. but that sort of means eating when you are already high (and actually, my range for a pre- prandial high is >130) and letting some highs ride for quite awhile. frankly, i don't obey this directive. so my second question is...do most folks here wait to eat until you are in range? ok! rach > > OK, on this porkettes receipes which has 27 carbs per serving > that would raise my blood sugar 135 points. Guest guest
As you all can tell, I am catching up on some of my emails. here's a couple comments...It is a great rule to remember to experiment and test with all the foods you eat and volumes etc.....to see what you can tollerate or what you need to adjust for. Also, I don't test to eat, I test to adjust what I eat or my meds...My other comment is rather selfish and I realize that many have interactions with very non-understanding friends and family, BUT most of what a diabetic should eat IS VERY GOOD FOR EVERYONE!!!! Eating healthy should be everyones goal...Remember--- " EAT TO LIVE, NOT LIVE TO EAT " .....Rolf [alldiabeticinternational] Re: Porkettes Hi, I just wanted to share my point of view with you. With your blood sugar at 120 at the time you eat seems awful high to me. There are days that I have pancreatitis pain and I can't even eat and my blood sugar rises to over 500 by itself, I tend to use more insulin than if I were having a regular meal. There are also days when my sugar goes into the 40 and I eat beyond my regular meal and take less insulin. I am on a sliding scale and I try to keep things normal as possible. I guess what I am trying to say is your milage may vary. You should watch very closely anything that you may eat when your sugar is 120 because it does not take very much to tip the scales. Knowing that you only have 20 more to be at the high limit you need to adjust your eating habits or see your doctor because you may have to start taking oral medicine very soon. The body changes as you get older and for me that is a daily problem because of my pancreas problems. With sugar staying near 120 mark for me that is an injection of 30 units of insulin for every meal. I also know that 235 is not very high for some people. I have heard of some that their doctor wanted them to keep their sugar at 300 to avoid the sudden drop that would go as low in the 20s. We all are different, so please do not leave. Just use what you know works for you at the time. I also agree that who you cook far is important if they have no diabetes problem. I would not like it if I had to make my family suffer just because of me. There is a lot of factors to think about it when you are a diabetic. Some choices may cause more damage than the disease itself, like family problems. We are in this together though we all are different. Just my own opinion. Please stay with us. " sorry Bobby no popcorn at the movies because uncle Jim has diabetes " ... not my kids.....not even my diabetic kid!!!
