My name is Keri. I am a single Mom with 4 kids. My 7 yr (almost 8~ 7/31)

was just diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes on June 24th. He spent a week in the

hospital. I initially took him to the ER after diabetes symptoms persisted

even after medication changes.

See, he also has the challange of Bipolar Disorder.

Hi Keri, I don't know if you know The Lord, but I want to assure you, He

knows you and your son. He has sat you right down in the middle of a wonderful

group ;-) All his issues are understood here. I am the mother of a bipolar son

(38) and am raising his child since birth (13 soon). I know the despair that

sneaks on in if you don't tell it to take a hike ;-) Have you read The

Bipolar child? I found it interesting, and I was able to determine my is

a

" rapid cycler " . Meaning her blues can be replaced with smiles in seconds, for

no apparant reason. It is a challenge, but the medications have come a long

way, along with the meds for ADHD. They have determined these often go hand

in hand. How do you cope with school? Problems there are not to difficult if

you know the ropes. It took me a while to learn them, but share willingly.

By the Grace of God, has been on the honor roll the past year and a

third. She works hard, but the resource teacher makes sure she understands the

assignments. This is almost a miracle for , to pull this off.

I know this is a hard battle, then to have to deal with the physical and

emotional sides of diabetes, you are in a double whammy. The challenges are

real,

but so is the help. The more you know, the better for you all. I am sorry

you are on your own through this, it is easier when the challenge is shared. I

hope you come to see us as the extended family you need to help you through

tough days, and to cheer with you when things are just going so well! I know

your little ones keep your hands full, hope you have time for us all :-) Hugs,

Marilyn

Thank You so very much!!!! A few months ago I was wallowing in self pity over

the Bipolar...lol and God said ok chickadee you think you can't handle this,

well let me show you what you can handle...lol. I definitely have God in my

life! Without him I would be nothing, and have no hope. I am by no means the

model Christian (my potty mouth is MY big downfall ;) ) but I do my best to

get through all that life has thrown my way. I truly believe God has big plans

for me and just keeps booting me in the butt to head me in the right

direction!!!

In the last 5 years I gave birth to a critically ill preemie, lived with an

abusive man who has violated our children in the worst of ways (and is now not

allowed ANY contact with my two youngest children), then we had my 7 yr old in

a mental hospital diagnosed with PTSD and ADHD and then the BP dx followed

after the antidepressants sent him into severe mania. Then a close family friend

was sitting the two youngest and not paying attention to them and her teenage

son raped my boys. He is now in jail. As soon as we got on top of that,

came this latest blow...and I suspect more is to come...the doctors suspect

Donnie also may have Celiac disease....UGH!!! So yes my load is one of those you

see on the highway with siren light escorts...it's a WIDE LOAD. But with good

friends, support and God I will overcome!!!

The school is a joke. They refused him sevices at his IEP in June saying he

is too smart (IQ 131) and they don't want to label him with SED. Ummm hello

folks...he IS BIPOLAR...that will be with him for life lets not sweep it under

the rug. He is what he is. What it boils down to is $$$. They don't want to

have to provide the services. BUT NOW they are having to hire an AIDE to be

with him all day for the diabetes so they are stuck now!!!

Thank You for the support...as you can see I need it!!! ;)

hugs

Keri

Hi Keri, You are right, with a diagnosis of ADHD, and Bipolar disorder, you

will certainly be needing help from the school. Where are you located? You

need resource information, badly. The aide they are hiring is not someone who

will help his schooling. Have you checked with the resource teacher? The

school psychologist? They can all help you, but you have to make noise, and not

let them off the hook. If you are seeing no help coming, go to the disctric

offices, and explain that you feel bad about it, but you have no option but to

seek legal assistance to get the help your son needs. When they know you mean

business, they should come around. It took me 4 years to get my the

help she needed. The principal finally came to us and said " Gee, we really let

her fall through the cracks, didn't we? " I should have dealt with the

district offices sooner. My son is a juvenille probation officer. He had lots

of

contacts and that really helped me. You and your sons are in my prayers. If

you don't want to have your son using those same words, you may want to consider

changing that! LOL Kids only pick up their parents very worst habits you

know! Hugs, Marilyn

Thank You and yes I know....some habits are hard to break and that has been

my venting stress outlet so it is a tough one....I work on it daily...funny

thing is he never uttered a foul word until he was in the psych hospital and

roomed with a tourettes kid (he learned words there even *I* didn't know)... :/

My others don't do it either so I am lucky but I do know it is something I want

to change..

hugs

Keri
