If, after you have seen it, you wish to receive it, free of charge, please let me know. Anyone who does not wish to read this, is asked to simply hit delete. " > > Enraged by the response, the farmer was tempted to fire him on the > spot. Instead, he hurried outside to prepare for the storm. To his > amazement, he discovered that all of the haystacks had been > covered with tarpaulins. The cows were in the barn, the chickens > were in the coops, and the doors were barred. The shutters were tightly > secured. Everything was tied down. " She stood at my side, > watching her sister roll and tumble in the thick quilt. Finally she let go and > ran to her own bed, burying her face in the luxurious bedding. At that > moment, something told me that maybe we would be all right. > > Then Arlys heard a knock on the door. " I'll get it, " she called, dashing > down the steps to the entrance. > > Our neighbor burst in. " look out the window! " he yelled, taking the steps > two at a time. " The lumberyard's on fire! " > > Bright orange flames devoured the old dry wood in the next rayd. A gigantic > bonfire reached to the heavens, stretching higher than our roof. Only an > eight-foot alley separated us from the wild, angry inferno. > > " We've got to get out of here. " The neighbor scooped up the girls and > headed out the door. The apartment was filling with smoke. What should I take? I > ran around in circles, trying to think. What should I save? I couldn't > make up my mind, Choking, I stumbled down-stairs, carrying nothing. > > Outside, I walked into a wall of heat. The girls stood with a group, > fascinated by the flames. I grabbed their hands and pulled them back to where I > thought we would be safe. Firemen swarmed the block. But the fire had become > beastlike, seeming to defy any attempt to stop its rampage. > > Flames roared over into our apartment. I watched as the blaze consumed > everything we had. Fiery debris fell from above. Nothing, I thought. Now we > have nothing. > > A quake built beneath my feet. The rumble grew louder. Suddenly we were > knocked to the ground by an earsplitting boom! Instinctively I sprawled on top > of the girls. I spread out my body, trying to cover them, but a foot and a > hand stuck out from under me. Then someone yelled, " Run! The gas lines > leading to the Laundromat are exploding! " > > I struggled to my feet, reaching for my babies at the same time. Arlys > crawled up and darted forward, but Kerri was having difficulty. " Mommy, my leg's > on fire! " I searched for her leg. An ember had etched its way into her > flash. As I brushed it away, I could hear my hair cracle and sizzle. > > We hadn't run far when the second explosion threw us to the ground. I > pulled the girls under me again, trying to cover them completely this time. The > tremendous heat of the explosion burst through our huddle. It took our breath > away. > > " Kerri, Arlys, we'll be okay. " My own words comforted me. I knew I had > everything that counts. God, be with me and my children, I asked. > > Suddenly the intense heat seemed to lessen. We could breathe normally. > " Look, Mommy, " she said again, " look. " > > " Stay down, honey. Don't move until I know it's safe. " > > " Mommy, you have to look. Behind us. Look at the pretty angels. " > > I turned toward the fire, expecting to see a mushrooming cloud of smoke. > Instead I witnessed something quite different. I saw them too! Real live > angels. Arm in arm, they formed a semicircle around us, with wings open to > deflect the heat of the fire. > > Soft voiced said in unison, " God loves you; do not worry. No harm will come > to you. " > > I felt a presence of power around us. A peace hugged me. I heard a > whisper: " Everything will be all right. " Just as I'd told the girls. > > The firemen had finally contained the flames. Someone was pulling on my > arm. " Trudy, are you okay? " It was my neighbor. > > " Did you see them? " I asked. > > " Who? " he said, and I knew he hadn't. For some reason, the angels had been > for us alone. > > The girls took charge and led me across the street. We three sat down on > the cool green grass and watched as the fire slowed. > > Everything will be all right, " Kerri reminded me. " The angels said so. " > She had seen and heard them too. > > Much of the pain of the past was forgotten after this. When the girls > remembered their losses, they blamed the fire. It was something tangible they > could hat without feeling guilty. > > As for me, fear of the future would never plague me so hard again. My > daughters and I were together; that togetherness was our home. And with God, we > had everything that counts. > > Soon after the fire, I made new quilts for Kerri and Arlys.
