Guest guest
I just came across an article from a food allergy network newsletter back in 1995 regarding cross-reactivity for latex allergy. Some food proteins are structurally similar to latex proteins and therefore in a sensitive person, a reaction could occur with these foods when someone is allergic to latex. It says: " Foods most commonly causing allergic reactions in latex-allergic persons are bananas, kiwi, avocados, and European chestnuts. Other foods which have less commonly caused reactions are potatoes, tomatoes, and pitted fruits (peaches, plums, cherries, etc.) " Thought you might like to know this for future reference if you do not already have this information. I have never given him bananas as he is very allergic as it is and the only food that I am highly allergic to is bananas. Even a little bite of something with bananas will send me inot a tizzy. love, sharon mommy to Jake (5) and fraternal twins (34.5 weeks) (3/30/97) - Cole -(nda) and Clayton (eosinophil gastroenteritis, food allergies, g-tube, Nissen and possible latex allergy, some dd and undiagnosed neuro issues)

Guest guest
No steroids, Gastrochrom for the eos and Tagamet for the stomach pain. I have been off the Gastrochrom on my own for several months except when I would have pain but am trying to be more consistent with it. I just have a terrible time remembering to take it. Judy Re: [eosinophilic gastroenteritis] Latex allergy Judy, Spencer's Eos's count in the blood will be really high and he will have a very low WBC. Go figure. Guest guest
At the time Remi was tested for Latex allergy, it was NOT Elisa testing. There was only one lab in the country who tested for this, but now it is a much more recongized allergy. Probably more are testing for this. There are so many products with latex-it is unreal. From bras, underwear, socks, sweatpants, diapers (except Huggies) bathing suits to the rubber mats in the bathtub. Pencil erasers, koosh balls, paint....Balloons are a biggie for us. Remi reacts to those from inhaling the latex, but will react to touching the tires on her wheelchair. I found this site very helpful for us and Remi's teachers. It lists most know products with Latex. http://www.latexallergyhelp.com/ It lists products by either home or medical use. Good luck. Guest guest
Thank you Phyllis, I had been wondering where I could find a list of things. It is really interesting and I have to wonder after reading it about some things that I have quit using because they were uncomfortable, not really aware of allergic reactions, just discomfort. One I remember well was how my hands burned when using crutches. They were sore from the unusual use, but just burned for seemingly no reason. Another thing is bras. I had to switch to underwire with no elastic under the cups because of rashes and no bra is comfortable for very long. Also tape in the hospital and Band-Aids cause itching. There are a lot of things on the list that I come into contact with that don't seem to be a problem, but will try to be more aware in the future. I wonder if I may just have a sensitivity and not a true allergy. Thank you so much for the site. One thing I have wondered about lately was drinking straws. They weren't on the list but wonder if any of them would have latex content Still looking for answers Judy Re: [eosinophilic gastroenteritis] Latex allergy At the time Remi was tested for Latex allergy, it was NOT Elisa testing. Guest guest
Just a thought.......it could have been a drug that they often use to regulate the heart during surgery. Did he become red, fever and a bit swollen??? Re: [eosinophilic gastroenteritis] Latex allergy , We are on a latex avoidance. The school and stuff just avoids the obvious like latex balloons. At hospital and doctors offices, we tell them and they dont use the gloves and use the latex-free equipment which is just about everywhere now. I watch out for labels when I buy clothes now and since I do the laundry, that is everyone's clothes.. For Kody the issue that brought it all to bear was the adhesive in tape and skin breakdown. we had a terrible time figuring out how to keep a dressing on his central line until we figured out we would have to manage WIHTOUT adhesive tape of any kind. So the school also knows band-aids are out for kody. Since we dont eat out, this isnt a problem but it has been for many people who do eat, cuz the employees often use latex gloves in food preparation. Steph.
