Guest guest
A few years back, there was a big hulabaloo over Mc's french fries being vegan as they contained beef broth as flavoring (added to the oil, IIRC). After the furor died down, Mc's supposedly removed it so their fries were vegan. Since then, Mc's has also claimed that their fries were free of gluten and milk or wheat allergens. Now, this is a big deal -- it opens up MASSIVE markets for them. By not having beef or dairy, they say their fries are vegan (not just vegetarian); they basically say the fries are potatoes, oil, and salt. By saying there are neither dairy or wheat/gluten allergens, those with allergies to dairy products and especially wheat can eat the fries. Well, welcome to the modern age where those who sell us foods are not entirely forthcoming about what exactly is IN that food. In the last week, Mc's quietly added a new item to their nutritional information on the fries -- " Contains wheat and milk ingredients " . Another interesting tidbit -- Mc's has also acknowledged that their fries contain a third more trans fats than previously thought. Considering that a large fry already had 8g in it, that means it now is thought to have ELEVEN (11) grams of trans fat. Of course, the new testing method that brought this to light, and its results, are currently being reviewed and they're also now testing their fries for gluten. This is just another example of why you cannot trust foods you do not prepare yourself. Granted, any food you don't grow yourself can and will have something you may not want to eat. By eating fresh, whole foods and using them as ingredients in meals you prepare yourself you vastly reduce the likelihood you'll ingest something you really don't want in your body. Add fresh vegetables from your garden and you're even better off. I'll send a copy of the article in another posting.
