I had no problem during surgery due to smoking. I still want to smoke but

have not had one since Saturday night. It is very hard but I had this surgery

to improve my health so I know I have to quit. I cut way back prior to

surgery and I'm not smoking now. It is a daily struggle but worth it, I

think. Good luck! No breathing problems as long as I don't smoke.

I had a few smokes the first couple of days after surgery. It made me feel

awful and brought on some coughing. So do the best you can.

Hi Rick,

I really am trying to quit. I have not had but three today. One pack

usually lasts about 2 days. You hang in there also. Three is good for me. I

am trying to quit because I, like you, am having this surgery to improve my

health. I don't want to defeat the purpose and die of something else. How

are you doing now? Surgery wise not with smoking. Thanks for the advice.

Keep me in your thoughts and prayers. You are in mine.

Cindy I am an ex smoker. I quit 13 years ago. I used to have colds that turned

into neumonia all the time. Not now. To help you quit maybe you need some shock

therapy. By that I mean volunteer in a cancer hospital and see what smoking can

do to people. And they can really use the help.

I know how bad smoking is for your health and especially if you have

something like CMT, but I can't seem to quit and stay quit! I didn't

start smoking until I was 25 and I am now 52. I did stop twice for 2

years both times, but all the MANY other times I have quit have only

lasted a few months, weeks, or days! The first time I quit for two

years is because I had pneumonia and I thought I would never want to

put another cigarette in my mouth again. The second time was because

I say my mother on a ventalator in ICU. It is like I can't stop

unless

I have a really good incentive to make me stop. My seventeen yr.old

daughter use to keep ear infections until I stopped smoking in the

house. Addictive personalities run in my family big time! My other

daughter, Jana, who is 28 and who drs. say has one of the most

addictive personalities they have ever seen, also has CMT and she

smokes. She also has asthma and has been in the hospital several

time

for pnemmonia and to the ER often for respitory distress! Yet, she

too can't seem to quit smoking. She is addicted to all kinds of

things. Perfume, clothes, people, aromas, etc!

When I started years ago I remember thinking and saying that I just

couldn't believe that people could become so addicted to cigarettes

and that after a year I would be able to put them down. I've put them

down many times since making that statement!

How many of you CMTers smoke and how bad is it affecting your CMT? I

just haven't felt good the last couple of days. For the last couple

of years off and on, for a few days at a time I feel weak and achy.

My body and face will feel tingly and if I smoke a cigarette it will

make it worse so I will cut back and not smoke very much for a few

days, but after the symtoms go away I will start right back to my

pack

a day. So far today after having only a few puffs my ears felt funny

andI could feel my face getting more tingly so I stopped. Right now

I

am chewing a piece of Nicorette Gum and praying that I will never

pick

up another cigarette again!

I need to hear as many negative things that I can about smoking and

how it effects you when you have CMT. When you are yonger you really

don't seem to worry near as much about it as you do when you start

getting older and things start going wrong. Also, what exactly is

vasculitis and what are the symptoms? I read on one of the message

boards that people with CMT sometimes get this.

Thanks,

My B-day is close to yours, May 25th and I'm 49 also. How about that...and

I was 45 miles close to you - omen, now I'm wondering what could have

Cindy, I don't smoke.... But, when I'm around cigerette smoke it makes me

very sick. I throat starts hurting and then I come down with a could and

have to be very careful for it not to go into pnemmonia.

My father-n-law passed away last year of cancer of the lungs. He had smoked

most of his life and had also said he could stop smoking anytime he wanted

to. He was diagnoised and died 3 weeks later... We had to watch him die. It

was the most horrible experience in my life. His lungs would fill up with

liquid and theycouldn't keep them drained because of all the poisins in his

lungs. It spread very quickly and soon his kidneys were affected and in the

other direction it was going into his brain. He was in severe discomfort

from not being able to breath. We tried to care for him the best we could

during his last days. It was very hard on my husband when he would have to go

into his dad and calm him because he couldn't remember where he was because

of the cancer in the brain. He actually shook my husbands hand saying it was

nice to meet him. Thinking he was a nurse or doctor or something.

I stayed with dad each time he went into the hospital and saw the agony he

went thru even with professionals caring for him.... It was to late for dad,

but it might not be to late for you. You say you have 4 girls. Please don't

allow your addiction to continue.. You really don't want your girls to see

or even hear of the pain you might have with cancer if you were to continue

smoking. GOD-LUCK, MY THOUGHT ARE WITH YOU,

Jeanie

60. My dad had mild symptoms starting late age 50's by age 70 he couldn't

walk more than a few feet. His great uncle was using homemade crutches as

a teen and in a chair by his mid twenties. That would of been the mid

1800's and all they knew was that he had a " muscle " condition. So mine

goes farther back then the Korean war. Still searching family history.

When did you first notice symptoms that something was wrong? Hey 1951 was a

good year right? LOL, >Becky M.

I am an ex smoker and know how hard giving up is. 5 cigs a day is not

a huge amount but it is still an increased risk if you are having

surgery. The main risks are assiciated with the aneasthetic and the

post op recovery. Post op pnuemonia is much more common in smokers

than non smokers. We are already at some greater risk because of our

size so it is like the double whammy. Having said that, my recovery

from surgery as a smoker was no worse than as a non smoker. If you

move around quickly after the surgery do the deep breathing exercises

and stick to 5 cigs you may be fine.

I wouldn't dream of telling you to give up, but maybe 2 life changes

at once might be the way to go????

Good luck

Angie

Yeah, I heard that before too (I do smoke)...geeez, I can't do

anything, huh?! I asked my doctor about it and he said that smoking is

just bad in general for any reason (duh.). He said that it doesn't

necessarily " cause " pancreatitis, just that it might hinder any

healing because of blood vessel constriction, etc.

Have you heard differently? I also have read from other people on the

subject who have had their doctors say the same, that it is just

basically an unhealthy habit in general , but shouldn't cause an

attack, per se....I do want to quit, but it's a tough tough thing. I

haven't had any pain or anything due to it, though...

Thanks!

I am almost 33. Will be in July. I have smoked since I was 12 years old.

Several years ago, I tried to stop smoking, and went into a terrible attack.

My GI told me that it if it helps me to smoke then to smoke.

I guess he thinks I am going to die anyway, lol.

There are worse things that we can do besides smoking.

I have tried everything to quit from pills given to me by my Doc, to quitting

back a little a day. And nothing seems to work.

So, I guess if pancreatitis doesn't kill me, then smoking will.

Like it has been said. We are going to die someday.

Take Care, Lots of Love and Hugs,

Tammy - TN

For Pete's sake, you have to die of something! All of these people who

constantly pester smokers about their health need to take a chill pill. Of

all the vices I can think of smoking is pretty low on the offense scale. All

these holier-than-thou, self-righteous, arrogant, " smoker-haters " can go

climb a tree. And, yes, I've cared for people in my family who have died of

lung cancer and emphysema, esophageal cancer and other smoking related

disorders.

After thinking about it, I don't know if I made myself clear enough on

this...Casca, do I need to amplify anything here? (You see, Mark Armstrong

always acts as my conscience on these matters and lets me know if I say too

much! He would be my fishing buddy except we live on oppostie sides of the

continent and that makes it difficult to meet at a lake or stream, or even

to get together for a soda. [We can't drink beer anymore, y'know, we have

pancreatitis, so we drink soda at social functions, but that's another whole

story.] So whadaya think Mark?)

I've found on several occasions when hospitalized for an attack that

when I smoke the first 2-3 days I get pain in the area where my

pseudocyst is. It's not excrutiating pain, rather a dull pushing

ache. Only when I inhale though. Never heard of smoking causing

pancreatitis. Although it is an unhealthy habit in general, it's the

only thing that keeps me sane sometimes. Keeps my big mouth shut, off

of the floor(so I avoid nurses with needles) and keeps my hands from

punching something or someone.

I quit smoking almost 4 years ago, and now I can even

go places where people smoke and not be tempted...YAY!

But now that I am a non smoker it makes me nauseated

when I am around it for too long. Strange huh?

You are right, ya gotta die from something! But when

YOU are READY, it will be a snap! Its just something

you have to be all the way into, half way or doing it

because someone else wants you to...just doesn't work.

Good Luck and Best Wishes... And I hope you are having

a really great day!

The other Mark here,

I smoke, and will probably continue to smoke until I

decide I don't wan't to smoke anymore. I did quit for

two years once; can't really tell you why I started

again. The one thing I do believe is that stress will

kill you faster than smoking. I remember trying to

quit when deep down I really didn't want to; the

stress was killing me. So I smoke, so what! If thats

the worst thing I do in my life, that ain't bad. For

the couple of years I didn't smoke, I didn't turn in

to an anti-smoking Nazi like some do, because I always

remembered what it was like to smoke. I think I'd

rather continue to smoke than kill myself with stress

trying to quit.

Just think about this. If your an ex-smoker or a

militant non-smoker, keep in mind how many people have

treated you when you ask for narcotics to kill the

pain of CP. That might knock you off your high-horse.

Just remember that when you pass judgement on others

for their habits, perhaps you should take a look at

your own bad habits; like being a busy body, poking

your nose into other peoples business.

Would anyone care for a cigarette?

Your Friend,

Mark

Mark - I'll take one. When I got my diagnosis my doctor told me I had to eat a

low fat diet, exercise more and quit smoking - I told him he could have 2 out of

3 or dead bodies strewn all over town - he seems to be satisfied with that for

now although he still feel obligated to mention the quitting smoking thing at

every visit and I give him the standard reply - " Yeah, I know I should quit but

.. . . . " . TTFN,
