Guest guest
Dear All: My daughter has bilateral microtia. In Indonesia (where we live) 90% of the little girls here have pierced ears. The girls get their ears pierced a few days after they are born!! , for obvious reason, didn't get hers pierced. And to make things fair, I didn't get her sister's ears pierced either. But lately 's been asking for them. Now my question, without wanting to sound too stupid, is do you think it would be alright to do this??? She has the part for where the earrings will go. I'm just wondering whether this will effect the surgery later on. But don't you think it would boost her morale a bit that she at least can wear earings like the other kids, or would it draw too much attention to her ears?? She's already used to kids and older people looking at her ears and her hearing aides. Maybe it won't matter that much??? What do you think??? Nova Chelvi, I'm sorry I missed the seminar at your place. Although we're almost neighbors, the timing just isn't right at the moment. Maybe in the future... Guest guest
Nova, Do not consider yourself at all silly for asking the group about earings for . My daughter is only 4 months old with unilateral microtia/atresia, still I thing about getting her ears pierced often. I wonder if she will ask before she is old enough for surgery and whether or not it will be ok. I also wonder if it is possible, if it will only draw extra attention to her ear. I am not a doctor, so I can give you a medical opinion, but I think if it's ok with the doctor who will operate later, go for it! She deserves to have what she wants and what every little girl is entitled to. She shouldn't feel as though she has to miss out on anything. Please let me know what the answer is from the world of medicine when you know and good luck to you and . Guest guest
Hi Nova We will certainly try to have more forums in the future and you are welcome to join us when the time is right for you. Meanwhile, I will post any updates I have on this site. Thanks for your reply. As for your daughter wanting her ears pierced ... I'd say go for it ... you bet ...it will certainly boost her morale. There was this girl aged 8 at the forum with ear rings on both ears and she has unilateral microtia, Her hair was pinned up in a pony-tail ... She looked really good. Both your daughters would too. Guest guest
Hi Nova, I can speak from experience. I have (well I had reconstruction done as an adult and just recently completed it)unilateral microtia/atresia. I had enough lobe on my right ear to allow me to pierce my ears. I pierced them(as a young teenager) by myself and have worn earrings ever since. I felt being able to wear earrings did make me feel better and allowed me to feel just like everyone else. My having my ears pierced did not interfere in anyway with my reconstruction. However my right ear has to be repierced now since the surgery and releasing of the lobe did cause the piercing to be lost but I am looking forward to getting it repierced and wearing my earrings again! Hope this helps somewhat .... Patton

Guest guest
hi all, just as a point of general information, after the reconstruction (which means the earlobe has been rotated), hoop earrings (rather than straight posts) usually hang well and look quite good! best, dr eavey Re: earings for bilateral microtia Nova, Do not consider yourself at all silly for asking the group about earings for .
