Guest guest
Our surgeons have been doing bypass surgeries for a while, and I got a copy of the pre- and post- surgery diets and pre-requisitions for surgery. Not only did the patients have to be greater than 100 lbs overweight, they also had to have been on some sort of weight loss program for over 6 months without success, and the weight had to be hazardous to their health. (DUH!) Seems like there was something else, but I can't remember it right now. As for the diets, I had to laugh. I mean, if they could stick to those to begin with, they wouldn't have needed the surgery! Pre-op was small portions, low fat, lots of liquids, etc. Post-op were VERY small portions--we're talking tablespoons--of sugar-free liquids, etc. Two to 3 weeks out, they could add things like sugar-free pudding, pureed vegetables, fruits, meat; no salads, grains, etc. Six weeks out, still limited portions, still no carbonated beverages, popcorn, gas-producing veggies, seeds, nuts, etc. Then they are supposed to start a walking program and work up to a more extensive exercise program. Most folks don't stick to the guidelines and gain their weight back. There are lots of complications, too. Losing weight so quickly sets most folks up for gallbladder flare-ups and some have to have that surgery later. It can cause heart problems, and they have to work to get in enough protein to function. In fact, there are so many complications, some of the insurance companies are now refusing to pay for the surgeries, and our surgeons quit doing any more bypasses after January 20. SBD seems much easier, IMO. in NC
Guest guest
And, gastric bypass can result in death. I personally knew a woman that died as a result.
