Help!

I have a friend who is pregnant and she doesn't want to nurse! I don't want

to be too pushy, and I know I come off as a breastfeeding zealot when I try

and talk to her. Can you please help me with some websites to share with

her, or ways to speak with her so that she won't feel like I am preaching to

her? PLEASE! :)

Thanks,

Shanah

I just posted portions of the AAP's policy statement on breastfeeding, and

I bet that several of us here will be surprised to learn that formula is

the Academy's fourth choice for infant feeding. Direct breastfeeding is

first, then expressed breastmilk is second, then banked (fortified)

breastmilk third, and iron-fortified formula is fourth. They even caution

pediatricians to weigh the benefits of breastfeeding against the risks of

not receiving human milk.

The RISKS they list are a large number of acute and chronic diseases:

diarrhea

lower respiratory infection (such as RSV and rotavirus)

ear infections (otitis media)

Influenza type b (bacteremia)

bacterial meningitis

food poisoning (botulism)

urinary tract infection

necrotizing enterocolitis (portions of the bowel tract die)

intestinal perforation

sudden infant death syndrome

insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus

Crohn's disease - O'Rourke, of Poltergeist, died from this at age 9!

ulcerative colitis

lymphoma (childhood cancer)

leukemia

allergic diseases (studied children for 17 years!)

liver diseases

celiac disease

other chronic digestive diseases

decreased cognitive development

Beth,

The thought of ever having to leave my baby to go back to work

depresses me so much. I definitely know how you feel. I am trying to

begin a home based business for that very reason. That way, I can have

all of the time I need to spend with my little one and never miss a

beat!

Lesli,

I'm sorry but I don't know the answer to the green spit-up. It sounds like

it could be bile or something, but I really don't know. I'd suggest calling

your physician.
