Guest guest Report post Posted February 19, 2006 Thank you Carol. As a newbie, I want very much to distinguish between " Pure " SCD and the various interpretations that exist in the autism community. That's why I'm asking so many questions here, and not on all those other lists. As I read and learn, I realize that the quote-unquote " SCD diet " as practiced by many of the parents I know isn't a true SCD diet. I want to do it right, for benefit of my son. Therefore, I appreciate your answering all my piddly little newbie questions (though I've read the SCD and pecanbread sites to exhaustion, my son is a tough case and I can't find exact answers that fit him). I also appreciate your setting us all straight on what's true SCD as Elaine intended it, and what's not. We need someone to separate the wheat from the chaff. We have had ongoing issues with groups that combine diets and still call them SCD plus whatever else they are doing. Some GFCF advocates actually asked why we meanies don't allow a few illegal treats once in a while. The bad gut bugs loved this idea biut Elaine did not!. I urged some of the moderators to have the courtesy to direct beginners to Pecanbread so they could get " the real deal " and being principled people they kindly complied which was duly appreciated. Some parents who " combined' ended up with pretty sick kids and came back to roost here SCD is a trademarked diet and cannot be tampered with and still be called SCD. As one poster here noted we can all do as we please but I am pointing out that it may not be SCD and in such a case should not be labelled as such. Six years in daily harness with SCD has taught me the importance of complying as much as is possible. Sorry if I have come on so much and so strong today. I think I'll give it a rest for a few days so you can enjoy life without my " third grade teacher " attitude. Carol F.

Guest guest Report post Posted February 19, 2006 Suzanne, You're right to ask so many questions... and this is the right group. Many ASD parents don't do a " pure " SCD (some don't do casein, goat yougurt, Sweet& Low; Rotation, fish/mercury concerns, food allergies,etc.). What's nice about Pecanbread is that they've taken much of this into consideration and modified the " pure " SCD for us. For example the staging is helpful. The moderators and participants are very helpful and dedcated. Agape, Suzanne szmidford@...> wrote: Thank you Carol. Guest guest Report post Posted February 19, 2006 Amen ! In case any one is interested, posted a link on the autism research institute's website earlier. There is a position paper posted by a long list of DAN doctors (the brightest and the best of them) in the " think-tank. " Under their paper titled " Treatment Options for Mercury / Metal Toxicity in Autism and Related Developmental Disabilities: Consensus Paper " , they state on pg. 8: " Reduction of Toxic Exposure . . . . *AVOIDANCE OF FISH and shellfish, especially the largest fish (shark, swordfish, tuna), which are highest in mercury. (Purified fish oil is allowed, as that contains important essential fatty acids and does not contain significant amounts of mercury. The safest oils are those that have also been tested for PCB's and other fat-soluable toxins). " The bold letters are my emphasis. While I understand that fish are permitted on SCD in its truest form. The above may prove to be helpful information for those of us who wish to be fanatically careful with exposing our children to mercury. I feel it is relevant information since so many of us are trying to heal our children and help them rid their bodies of mercury through diet (including following SCD). Please feel free to eat fish if you like (especially since it is allowed by SCD). But can anyone disagree that we should be able to share information so that we can all make intelligent, informed, and personal decisions concerning the health of our children? Jeni Lynn concerned mother of 3 children on SCD Re: Re: Fish Suzanne, You're right to ask so many questions... and this is the right group. Agape, Suzanne szmidford@...szmidford@...>> wrote: Thank you Carol. Guest guest Report post Posted February 28, 2006 This is one of my favorite recipes, it is easy AND delicious: 4 (6-ounce) Tilapia fish fillets Coarse salt and pepper 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, 3 turns of the pan 3 cloves garlic, chopped 1 small to medium yellow skinned onion, sliced 1 red bell pepper, seeded, quartered lengthwise, then sliced into 1/2 inch strips 1/2 pint grape tomatoes 1 cup white wine 1/4 cup chopped flat-leaf parsley, a couple of handfuls, chopped Season fish with salt and pepper. Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium high heat. Add 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, 2 turns of the pan. Add fish to pan and cook 2 minutes on each side, carefully transfer to a plate with a thin spatula and loosely cover with foil. Add another tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, 1 turn of the pan, then add garlic, onions, and red bell peppers. Season veggies with salt and pepper. Saute 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Add tomatoes and cook 1 minute more. Deglaze the pan the wine and bring up drippings with a wooden spoon. Slide fish back into pan. Cover the pan and reduce heat to simmer. Cook 5 minutes. Sprinkle parsley over the fish and serve.
