The best pasta sauce you can get doesn't come in a jar -- you make it yourself. Thing is, it only takes about 10 minutes. Get yourself a large can of no-salt-added crushed tomatoes. Make sure you read the label to be certain there is no added sugar. My personal favorite is Dei Fratelli -- it comes in a big ole 28oz can. Chop about half an onion and 2 cloves of garlic. Saute the onion in a little olive oil in a 2 quart pot (pretty much a standard pot in most kitchens). After a couple of minutes, add the chopped garlic. Remember: when sauteeing, you need to keep things moving in the pot, don't just put them in and walk away or they'll burn. After about 5 minutes in all, add your crushed tomatoes. Watch out for splatter. Give it all a good stir and let it heat up (about 5 minutes). (You'll have to keep stirring it every so often, of course.) Now, just add a couple of pinches of dried oregano (I use flakes) and about a teaspoon of dried basil (also flakes). Stir them in and let the sauce continue to cook, stirring every so often, for another 5-10 minutes. If you like, you can add a little pepper and/or salt to taste (I do not). If its available, you can cheat a little here -- Dei Fratelli makes a canned crushed tomatoes that is pre-seasoned with basil and herbs. With this, you just saute the onions and garlic, add the crushed tomatoes and it's ready. Last time I went to the store, I bought like 20 cans of the basil and herbs variety. LOL This sauce is very sweet and far, far healthier than the typical canned/jarred stuff you can buy. It takes 15-20 minutes to make and you can be doing other things for most of that time. Even better, you can always make it up while you're doing other things then toss the whole thing into a bowl in the fridge to use later. I use this sauce to make any of a number of pasta dishes including ziti, linguini and pretty much any other pastas. I also use it when making manicotti, a family favorite. Thanks! Well, if you MUST buy that horrible stuff on the shelves.... As I understand it, Classico makes an SBD friendly spaghetti sauce and Hunts is supposed to have one as well. The key is to always check the ingredients. You want to stay away from added sugar (in all its forms). There may be others that are regional brands and you may find one or more at your local whole foods/health food store as well.
