Guest guest
Barb, when I called to make Priority Seating arrangements at the various restaurants I asked for the # of the special chef and almost all the restaurants had such a #. If they didn't have a special chef to call, they noted the restrictions in their computer. I initially tried to call a couple of special chefs a couple of days before the PS as advised but such wasn't too productive as I'd either get a voicemail, or some such thing. I instead asked to speak to the special chef upon our arrival at a restaurant. I think the key is to call ahead though because a couple of restaurants said they just ran out of gf, etc. pancake mix and I think had I called in advance they would have had more in stock. So next time I would go more out of my way to talk with the special chef in advance, to make sure they have the ingredients in. There is a list, MosaicDisney (AT) e started by my Disney mentor Barb Strate (the owner of this list as well) and we're all happy to chat in further detail. Guest guest
if you call Disney reservations 800 # ,,,they will give you all you all the info on the meal schedules and reservations, also ......at the same time you can make special diet request and do it for all the days you will be there, for as many restaurants as you want and if you go into epcot just walk in ask to speak to the chef and THEY WILL BE VERY UNDERSTANDING. ex. we walked into the German place no reservations and it was buffet the chef came spoke to us and made my son a plate with a grilled chicken breast with fresh fries. He loved it.. Also as a foot note TGI Fridays is very accomodating as a whole. Good luck.....

Guest guest
Marla, We have taken our boys to Disney several times in the past 4 years and I can tell you this...there is nearly nothing to eat there, but you can bring food in, they will just look through your bag at the gate. Other than fresh fruit (not much of that) and bottled water you are pretty much out of luck. Even when gluten/casein free it was a bit of a problem...very little selection and something my son ate that was supposedly okay had him tripping out by the end of the day. Your best bet is to eat before you go, take snacks and thermoses a-plenty and have a plan for what you are going to eat directly after. Guest guest
That really bums me out. When I called Disney, they made it sound like they are so accomodating and we all know they are the epitome of making you feel comfortable at all costs. So I guess I was really hoping it would work to actually not have to cook while on vacation. I really wanted to go cheap and stay at a in park hotel and the cheaper ones don't have a kitchenette. So here's the next question- where did you stay? Obviously somewhere with a kitchen. but where? We are trying to go as cheap as possible and are driving and not flying so that will help. But the food thing has me stressed (well, it always has me stressed!!!). Anyway, let me know of any tips. Guest guest
Strange - I went to Disney World when I was only gluten and dairy free and they were extremely acommodating to me. I've also been to Disneyland and had the same great experience. I ate really well and all the managers were very familiar with what was gluten free and dairy free. Each restaurant has a notebook with ingredients listed for each item, so you can look through it yourself. I do think that SCD would be quite a bit harder though. If you stay at a Disney resort and call ahead and talk to the head chef, they will prepare for you and make just about anything you need that is possible for them to get ahold of. Of course, this is more expensive... Liz > > > > Hi , Ya gotta stay away from *any* processed food. Later on, when > > your gut has healed some, you can make your own buffalo wings. Guest guest
Marla, I am sorry to sound so down on Disney...they weren't UNACCOMMODATING...they are just a little limited in what they could do for us at a price we could stomach, no pun intended. There is a restaurant called Liberty Inn that was accommodating but SOOOOO expensive that we literally could not afford it. We are debt free and do not use credit cards at all and the amount our dinner would have been for two adults and two children was absolutely outrageous and would have used up all our cash...and we brought a lot. We only spent one night in a hotel so we didn't get a kitchenette...we just ate out of our cooler and then ate at the park in the tomorrowland restaurant...a meal that was frankly pretty awful. We were just GFCF at the time...how would you eat there and not get marinated meats? I would have trouble trusting them. SCD is much harder to be accommodating of, imo. If you have the money...get a kitchenette and eat at the Liberty Inn. Chrissy > > > > Hi , Ya gotta stay away from *any* processed food.
Guest guest
they are awesome!!!! it's the only place I've eaten out at (except for a wedding i was in ) LOL but still bought mostly my one - but at Disney yes you can bring stuff no glass jars - but they were so accomadting I was intro and a smidge of stage 1 and they actually cooked my carrots for 4 hours as I did the park and then i had steak and carrots with dinner like a real person in the family - hasn't happened since - so spoiled didn't want to leave - just call and email if needed speak to them ahead of time explaining everything and then speak to each chef as you arrive to each place- I think you'll have a great time!! eileen 20 months scd > > > > Hi , Ya gotta stay away from *any* processed food. Guest guest
Disney was soooo accommodating. I ate out 3 times in the 5 days I was there. I ate once at the Rainforest cafe. The kitchen manager came out and talked to me. I got bacon wrapped fresh shrimp and plain steamed veggies. Another day we went and had lunch with the Princesses in the around the world place. The actual chef came out and talked to me. One other time, I ate at a burger place. The kitchen manager had them clean the grill and cook me a fresh hamburger patty no seasonings. I did not react in Disney. I had been on the diet for about 8 months. What I did the rest of the time: I cooked about 4 pounds of chicken breasts and froze them in individual baggies. I boiled 2 dozen eggs. Honey. And some homemade salad dressing. I packed all that in one of those pyrex carrying cases with every single frozen pack I could fit in there. I called ahead and had a fridge put in the room. I packed it in my bag that was checked in (can't bring any of that onboard). This was all in the bag for about 8 hours and when I got to the hotel it was all still frozen rock hard. I brought a small icechest lunchbox thing to carry my food in at Disney. The eggs were even frozen. Each day I started out with a chicken breast, an egg or 2, and some frest fruit. I packed my bag with a couple chicken breasts, a couple eggs and my salad dressing. I would order a plain salad and put the chicken and/or eggs on it. For dinner, the same thing. At the time, I was tolerating raw fruits and veggies better than now. Eileen also went and I think she stayed in a hotel that offered food and I think they actually prepared food for her. The place I stayed in had a common food area that didn't prepare anything. It wasn't that bad. Preparation is the key. If you can call ahead to the restaurants you want to eat at and let them know your exact restrictions, they will work with you. If you are super sensitive, you might have issues or if the person doesn't understand your request. Make sure you talk directly to the kitchen manager or chef. When you say gluten and they aren't sure what that is, talk to someone else. If you talk to them ahead of time, it will make things much easier. I didn't, but I was lucky. I felt so special having the chef come out and talk to me. Instead of embarassment, I was happy they went out of their way to help. Look in the documents of the group. There is a document you can print out to bring with you and give to the kitchen staff. Guest guest
I've been to Disney World many many years ago when my diet was MUCH more limited than SCD is. We had rented a condo so had a kitchen, and as we were staying with the in-laws in Sarasota, I prepared whatever it was I would need there, brought it with us in a cooler. Then each day I would load my lunch and snack stuff into my large purse. I think I was on legumes in those days for my protein and would take a frozen container out just as we left and by the time I needed it, it was thawed. I augmented my bare necessities with fruit and things I could have when I could find them. It took pre-planning but worked out pretty well. Guest guest
Even way back when I only had to cope with hypoglycemia I couldn't get anything but some fruit at Disney World or land. You just have to know that. The visit I mentioned in the other note, my MIL had found a new condo place that was renting the units very cheaply as a come-on hoping we would buy one. It was really nice, and of course had a full kitchen. I don't know if there's anything like this now, but surely in the area there would be a variety of accommodations. If that doesn't work, three years ago this time we had to make a mad dash from the Seattle area to south TX for a deathbed visit to my brother. Between the IBS requiring a bathroom and my diet requiring a frig and freezer, we rented an RV. It was the only way. We didn't have enough rental time with the RV to stay at RV parks so we stayed at motels. All but one of them had small frigs and microwaves in the rooms. So we ate breakfasts and dinners from the RV supplies, and lunch as we went. Now, an RV and motels, too, is expensive! but we had no choice then. I'm wondering if with a few coolers, you could manage for a few days in a motel this way? You'd need to be able to shop, but there's usually some place if you look. Guest guest
I took along cheese, nuts, hard boiled eggs, avocado, and lots of scd cookies. I had a smoothie in the morning before leaving, and the rest of the day I kept snacking. I was hungry but energetic because of the protein snacks. At ight back in the hotel room, I microwave my prepared meals. Yum! I checked in with the airline a box of my foods, all frozen in advance. In the hotel I had a microwave and fridge, and I brought my blender. I also remember not having a bm the entire time because of the atmosphere change. Horrid. Enjoy!
