I got your itch when i learned why my alyssa's school required all kindergardeners to purchase a nylon laundry bag: previous head lice outbreaks led to the policy (they store their coats in the bags to prevent the lice from spreading from garment to garment). ick.

This is a tip my son's kindergarten teacher passed along to all of us

parents the first day of school. She stated that almost every year in some

classroom in the school there will be a case or two of head lice. There is a

grocery store in our area that has some extra thick plastic grocery bags

with handles. They are like the typical plastic grocery bags you might see

at say Meijers, but they are quite a bit thicker. The store donates the

bags to her. prior to the first day of school she writes each child's name

on a bag and hangs it on their hook in the room. When the kids come into

the classroom, any coat, jacket, sweater or backpack that they bring from

home goes inside the very sturdy plastic grocery bag. Then you run one of

the handles through the handle on the other side of the bag and hang it on

the hook by the handle that was passed through the other one. It sort of

seals up the bag before you hang it up. The thick plastic bag helps reduce

the spread of head lice because the plastic is thick, extra sturdy, the bags

dont rip easily and the plastic doesnt breathe or let air circulate very

well. It is not totally fool proof, but she has been teaching for over 20

years and she swears it really helps keep it from spreading to EVERY child

if a case of lice occurs. If you know that there is an outbreak of lice in

your childs school you can do the same thing with things your child brings

home - meet them at the door and seal things in a plastic bag for several

days until you are sure it's all cleared up. Any kind of plastic bag that

isnt ripped or likely to rip would work and try to seal the things inside of

the plastic by tieing the bag up or use a twist tie.

Just a thought to keep in mind.

Maureen

I feel for you , we had it last year and the mother of the child did

not do anything but wash her daughters hair, so she kept reinfecting

the class. I never did so much laundry in my life.

Sure. That's why I put it out there. I thought it made sense and should be

a help to someone.

Its hard to tell from what I learned, if your kids didn't have it just

wash all school clothes, coats ect... and the bedding and vaccum the

car seats and spray with lice killer spray.

My son came home with two of those little flyers last week. EEK! Poor kid,

I've been pulling at his hair and checking his scalp twice a day since!
