Guest guest
Sherye, Raisins are not SBD friendly during P1 or P2. Then again, neither are their original form grapes. Pumpkin, though, IS on the allowed list for P2: Pumpkin - 3/4 cup (considered a starchy vegetable; count as a starch/grain serving) Not sure who told you it was not SBD friendly. It's not allowed on P1, of course, but it's fine for P2. > This is all getting very frustrating to say the least. > When reading the book it says all kinds of meat are OK > for phase 1 on up but reading some of the > posts not all meat is SBD ok'd. This is not true -- the book says MOST meats are allowed, not all of them. In fact, the book does discuss some meats to avoid during your time on the SBD -- those with high amounts of fat or meats with added carbohydrates such as some lunchmeats. > Same with other things that conflict with > either the book or each other. There ARE some conflicts but there are also many UPDATES to what is contained in the book. These updates were/are posted to the oh-fishy-all web site periodically; they are regularly incorporated into our files area here. > My husband is now on Phase two even tho he hasn't lost the > 8-13 pounds he should have in the first two weeks. Some lose more, some lose less -- there are no guarantees and there can be none because there are MANY factors to consider. For example, one's diet before going on the SBD, how much weight one has to lose, medical/health conditions, and so forth. > Where does everyone get the information they are passing on > to the list? Much comes from the list, the official site, the files area, and experience/knowledge about the diet and nutrition. > I've never read, unless I missed it, that nuts, etc. were > limited to 1/4 cup a day either. There was a lengthy discussion on this some time ago. Someone passed along this information in error; the foods to enjoy/avoid list is very clear on the quantities of nuts one can have each day: NUTS AND SEEDS (Limit to one serving per day as specified. Dry roasted recommended.) Almonds - 15 Brazil Nuts - 4 Cashews - 15 Flax Seed - 3 TBS (1 oz) Macadamia - 8 Peanut Butter, Natural, and other nut butters - 2 TBS Peanuts, 20 small (May use dry roasted or boiled) Pecans - 15 Pine Nuts (Pignolia) - 1 ounce Pistachios - 30 Pumpkin Seeds - 3 TBS (1 oz) Sesame Seeds - 3 TBS (1 oz) Soy Nuts - 1/4 cup Sunflower Seeds - 3 TBS (1 oz) Walnuts - 15 > I also get recipes that say for instance " substitute the > whipping cream for something SBD friendly " but I have no > idea what that substitution would be. This is discussed in the book and on this list. If you do not know, you need only ask and someone here will quickly respond. For example, the common SBD substitute for heavy whipping cream is half-and-half. Where whole milk is called for, we use 1%/skim milk. Where cheese is called for, it must be 6g or less fat per serving or made from 2% milk. > Could I make a request, for all those who are just getting > started with this, that if you post a recipe please state what > phase it's good for and if there might be some substitutes > needed please list what you do to make it SBD friendly? Much of this diet is knowing and understanding the foundation for the meal plan so you can manage your own diet. You have to learn what ingredients are or are not permitted on the diet so you can think for yourself. Many recipes ARE posted as P1 or P2 compatible, and they are sorted in the files area as such as well. If you don't know which phase a recipe is for, just ask. In fact, you should ask MANY questions. If you are to successfully manage your family's food health, you need to be able to make these decisions. In the case of your husband, why not tell us a bit about him? What is his height, starting weight, current weight? What are his medical conditions? Is he sticking to the meal plan or is he sneaking the occasional off-plan item? The problem with managing a diet for someone else is that they have to be totally on board. This is especially difficult when that other person is not under your care 24x7, such as a spouse who works.

The newest version of the SBD " Good Fats Good Carbs Guide " states that pumpkin is to be avoided in P1, and it is limited (once a week max) in P2 & P3. > When reading the book it > says all kinds of meat are OK for phase 1 on up but > reading some of the > posts not all meat is SBD ok'd. The book has several contradictions; plus as more is learned the guidelines are updated (such as allowing dairy products in P1). We place the official updates in the Group files. > My husband is now on Phase two even tho he > hasn't lost the 8-13 pounds he should have in the > first two weeks. The 8 - 13 pounds is an average - not everyone is going to lose that much. > I'm just trying to make some sense out of the whole > confusing thing I guess. > If someone could refer me to a site where I could > read up on the specifics > I'd really appreciate it. " Should " should not be in your vocabulary in this respect, as everyone is an individual and loses weight at a different rate. He might have already been eating a generally low-carb diet. He might not have a lot of weight to lose - those closer to their goal weights (like 20 or 30 pounds or so) generally will not lose weight as quickly. Is he exercising? That will help a lot. Double-check what you're eating against the book's guidelines, and the updates we have posted here in our files. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/South-Beach-Diet-Getting-It-Right/files/ Does he have a thyroid condition? That will *really* make a difference on how fast he loses weight. Medications can also stall weight-loss - check the listed side-effects, if he's taking anything. Good luck! CindyB. I never thought to LOOK at the list of starchy foods on the P2 food list, as I considered it a vegetable. So ALL this time, I've been denying myself and my family delicious pumpkin dishes in the fall. Maybe I can make up for it now. I am very sorry I made the error of posting that pumpkin is not a SBD-friendly food. Donna
