Right of reply / The `virtual scalpel' does work

The new HIFUS (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) technology has

chalked up an 80-percent success rate in harmlessly eliminating

clinical symptoms of uterine fibroids. By contrast, in Israel, five

women a year die from hysterectomies and others experience multiple

complications. A response to a recent Haaretz Magazine article

The facts regarding the " virtual scalpel " technology, described here

recently ( " Breaking the ultrasound barrier, " Haaretz Magazine,

February 6), are clear: This is a breakthrough technology that

combines advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology and an

ultrasonic transducer with a computerized robotic system, which is

able to heat a localized spot accurately to destroy soft tissue deep

in the body (yes, " destroy " just as in boiling an egg), without

affecting surrounding organs, using real-time guidance, control and

feedback.
