Guest guest
Greetings ladies, There have been a lot of posts recently describing fantastic gyns and REs here in America. So I wanted to put in my two cents. I have been an active member of this list since last fall who has shared my surgical experiences with many members. Now I would like to share the name of my wonderful doctor. I know I live in a state that has only a few large cities, but I thought I would post the name of my Re along with a description of how wonderful he really is through my own experience. Dr. Doug Austin here in Eugene, Oregon has given me and my husband a new life. I met him last summer when my gynecologist leaned over my hospital bed and said, " This is your last transfusion, you need to make a decision: either have the hysterectomy or go to a fertility specialist to see if you have any other options beyond what I can do. " Years of suffering with terribly symptomatic fibroids and a diagnosis of adenomyosis kept me in my gyn's office about every three to four months for ultrasounds and blood tests. My anemia got so bad I had to have transfusions about once a year. So being the stubborn woman I am, I decided to see the fertility specialist before agreeing to any hyst operation. Well, Dr. Austin was booked until the following January! So I cleverly made an apt with another doctor at his office who was able to see me (knowing full well that once he saw me I would get into Dr. Austin's exam room sooner than January.) Sure enough I was right. After my initial visit, the other doctor reading my file, and seeing how badly I needed help, I saw Dr. Austin the next week! He performed an abdominal u/s and a vaginal u/s, both of which I had had many times before. But after seeing the bulk size of my uterus, he scheduled me for a hysteroscopy exam. With this exam he found a whole crop of submucosal fibroids that had appeared to all my prior gyns as adenomyosis on u/s screens. I had even had an open myo three years ago to remove intramural fibroids, but my surgeon missed all the submucosal buggers so my symptoms only grew worse. Dr. Austin's news was a shock. I did not have adeno, and my fibs were operable! He suggested it would take either one long abdominal myo operation or several hysteroscopic resections. Well, I was patient and opted for the resections (shorter healing time period & less pain.) After three resections (Sept, Nov, & Dec) I was told I could stop my horribly high dose of bc pills. I was a little nervous,(thinking I would hemorrhage like before) but since then my periods have been three days long, fairly regular, and with no clots, no pain, and no super maxies! I can actually wear white pants again! And no more breakthrough bleeding every day!!! I've got my life back. Dr. Austin is an angel indisguise, and believe me, I told him that! I am slowly back to running and feeling more and more energetic each month. Anemia takes quite some time to get past, you really don't realize how weak and tired you felt until you start feeling ten times better again. So my tribute to Dr. Austin to make a long story longer is that I would highly recommend him to any woman who has uterine dysfunction and wants relief from the misery it haunts her. I am so lucky to have the opportunity to try for a baby now. My hubby and I did not think it was ever possible that we could have our own biological children. Currently we are TTC without any medications or doctor intervention, but see Dr. Austin every three months for a fertility consult. Not only is Dr. Austin a wonderful doctor and surgeon, he is also a wonderfully personable man. He takes time to answer all my questions and encourages me to check with alternative medical care as well. I am considering seeing an acupuncturist this summer to help my body rid itself of all that synthetic estrogen I had been taking for so many years. My liver needs some healing time before a baby arrives. Many people here in town are open to alternative care. Dr. Austin even recommended a naturopath for me to speak to about diet and boosting my metabolism now that I'm over the anemia hump. This was at my request. So if any of you ladies are looking for an excellent RE in the Northwest region I highly recommend Dr. Austin. He accepts insurance and works with the local hospital and surgical centers. I even saw him on our news being presented an award for excellence in patient care and fertility techniques. So I know I'm not the only one who raves! Oh yes, and I volunteer at our other local hospital and I met a patient who was one of his patients. She has had the worst of fibroids and endometriosis herself. She raved about him as well. Good testamonials from patients with horrible uterine problems. So my two cents here will hopefully direct the ladies in my area to call Dr. Austin's office and make that appointment. You won't regret it! Most sincerely, :)Sonja, a woman with her life back!
